Day 20 at Martyr's Square Kotli

Has started early; as much commotion has occurred over the past couple of hours, on either side of the midnight clock:

I had just updated some diary data for February the 1st 2022 which featured Saddaqat Mughal Kashmiri and Malik Waseem Kashmiri. A few minutes later (c. 2300hrs on 07/02/2022) I received information that the home where Malik Waseem's family was staying - after being evicted from their home in Naluchi Muzaffarabad - had been surrounded by Muzaffarabad police. They were looking for Malik Waseem who has gone underground for many days to evade the police. They - police > DC > Commissioner > an entangled web of beneficiaries want to make use of the increase in land price to evict poor IOK refugees from 'evacuee property' actually owned by POK refugees, namely the descendants of Ratan Singh and Sardar Singh of Naluchi, Muzaffarabad.

It has long been our primary public policy goal to facilitate the return of POK refugees and their descendants to AJK and thus facilitate the return of IOK refugees to 48% of the land and over 61% of the population of Jammu Kashmir & Allied areas (JKA). So, let us find Ratan Singh's descendants and then we can take Malik Waseem's family back to Kupwara in IOK. If you want to peacefully, ethically, legally and democratically prevent external demographic change anywhere in JKA, then I urge you to support me in time, health and wealth.

It has been tense since midday......While on approach to the courts and after evading the police for many days - despite their increasing vigil at his residence Malik Waseem was beaten and thrashed in public before being dragged to the police station of Saddar in Muzaffarabad, the capital of AJK.

His crime? Standing up to the 'land mafia' of Muzaffarabad.

I wrote the following note late in the afternoon:

I think all right-minded aspiring citizens of what is described as the 'Free' part of Jammu & Kashmir have long had enough of this bogus, inhumane, ignorant and personality based system which is hell bent on bargaining away 94% of the territory of Jammu Kashmir and Allied areas so that some rich, greedy individuals can exploit the poor people of 6% of JKA, without restriction and accountability.

I assure you, you will all be punished for what you're putting this poor refugee family through. Albeit in a peaceful, ethical, legal and democratic manner.

You are punishing Malik Waseem for his association with me. For his unreserved support in reunifying this State. For wanting all the aspiring citizens of this territory - irrespective of their religious identity and political ideology - to co-exist peacefully and prosper like many other human beings throughout the world.

If you (whoever represents the farce that is the AJK government) do not reinstate Malik Waseem and his family in their home in Naluchi, Muzaffarabad by midday tomorrow (Wednesday February the 9th) I will conduct a hunger strike till death at Shaheed Chowk Kotli, where I have been conducting a 'Public Policy Workshop' for the last 20 days, gradually developing liaison with Bury Park Luton (UK) to assert our right to obtain the original land record of AJK in 1947 and the population census record of 1941. 

We have begun dialogue with the UK government on this matter and know that the AJK government and the Pakistani government doesn't have this record. We also know that the Indian government will not provide us with these records. 

Bizarre though it is, we thank you for providing all the evidence we need against you.

Allah willing, we will prove 'right is might' once more.

It and its variants have successfully designed the most greedy, ignorant, lazy and public-fund-loss-making enterprise that perhaps the world has ever seen.

We created its alternative - #PublicAssemblyAJK - #LokaniAssemblyAJK

Based on well over a decade of publicly funded and rigorously researched representative public opinion data, unlike the 4th and the 24th of October October 1947, both of which referenced the 'people' of Jammu Kashmir.....but had no documentation to prove they were abiding by the majority of public opinion.

The public were not equipped to make any other decision than to tolerate or welcome the Indian and Pakistani armed forces into this territory.

In 2022 we are equipped with everything but do not know how to assemble it.

Hence, the Public Assembly - Loka ni Assembly

0328hrs:

Day 01 at Martyr's Square - Kotli - AJK

The land of Ratan Singh's descendants, adjacent to the 'Chatti Badshahat' of the Sikhs of Muzaffarabad and occupied by fellow affectees of the 1947 religious-based conflict in Jammu Kashmir & Allied took another horrible turn just after midnight.

Malik Waseem, his brother Naeem Malik, Naeem's son Asad and their maternal nephew Saad, 4 womenfolk and 3 children of their household were brutally manhandled by the police and taken away. For a while it wasn't clear where they had been taken.

An hour or so later it emerged that the women had been taken to a shelter while Malik Waseem's whereabouts have not been established yet (0405hrs). He had initially also been taken to the police station but then taken elsewhere (so we thought) but it became clear later in the evening that he had evaded arrest and remained 'underground' till he could obtain bail, unknown to the rest of us.

I finally got to sleep at around 0700hrs....only to be woken up by a phone call at 1030hrs.....I am getting late for my midday appointment at Shaheed Chowk Kotli. Malik Waseem is still missing soon after being arrested just beyond midnight. The womenfolk of his family have been forced by the police into a refugee shelter (reliving 1947 yet again, despite 3 generations on). Meanwhile, a tussle between the Indian and Pakistani influences on JKA are zeroing in on this issue.

I reached Kotli at about 1500hrs, 3 hours later than I wanted to. Almost immediately a steady trickle of activists began visiting me but we first needed to clean our working space. The litter here is testament to the title of the following video. People who feel a sense of ownership over any land or property do not ignore garbage in their midst:

Once that operation was out of the way, we could sit down and begin interacting....

1851hrs (Update):

Indeed, it has transpired that Malik Waseem evaded arrest last night and is still at large but concealed on his own volition. The police have charged him, his elder brother Naeem Malik and Naeem's son Asad with Section 341 (obstructing a path apparently). The latter 2 are in police custody while the womenfolk of his family have been put in a refugee shelter in Jalalabad, Muzaffarabad. Waseem's parents are at a friend's house. Apologies for any misunderstanding.

Message from Malik Waseem: "I have been arrested despite bail order and am at Thana (police station) Saddar (Muzaffarabad). I have begun a hunger strike till release."

Watching this video reminded me of those tortuous and tormenting years that I spent in Pakistan between 2005 and 2007 - in particular - trying to make sense of this superimposed divide between Hindu and Muslim, between India and Pakistan. I felt this video to be very concise in its presentation:

I've even decided to extract some commentary and paraphrased it for those of you short for time in watching the video:

How this border transformed a subcontinent | India & Pakistan

At 6:00 minutes:
What the British described as needing 5 years to power transfer took 4 months...

Cyril Radcliffe who had never been to India - a lawyer - brought in one month before..with no idea of Indian politics or geography...yet drew lines affecting millions of lives (almost) perpetually.

He used maps and census data to look at religious identities of people and found that people of all religions lived amongst each other all over the region.

He only had 5 weeks to do this and said it would take years to draw a proper boundary.

Cyril Radcliffe had to conceal the fact that there were size-able communities of all religions e.g. the district below Amritsar and Shekhupura viz. Lahore:

Composition in Percentages:

61% - Muslims
18% - Sikh
17% - Hindu
4%  - Christian

These people had lived side by side for centuries.

The British lawyer left on Aug the 15th.

The borders (of a partitioned India) were made public 2 days later, prompting 14 million people to leave their homes/lives (in a panic) with ensuing chaos that led to unspeakable violence.

All this was fueled by the reckless mismanagement of an imperial power.

Despite that, Sikhs are still looking after a pre-47 Muslim community village (with shrines) in a place which Radcliffe decided would be in India viz. Massanian which proves that there is a common identity despite border.

If you take away the geopolitical bluster today, you can still see how much both sides have in common.

A school in Pakistan:
"Before partition, we Pakistanis and Indians used to live together in the same place."

At 12:37 minutes:
These kids (Skype calling between Indian & Pakistani schools) are speaking a similar language and it takes them just minutes to dive into the common roots of their culture.

It is the politician who poisons people's minds.

The divide is created, nurtured, fostered because it suits a certain politics.

Over the years politicians on either side have exploited tension to stoke feelings of nationalism.

The reason for hatred of the other are politicians.

Over 70 years later, in many ways the divide is getting thicker; to divide families, halt trade, cut connection, stop cooperation, instill fear, promote hatred and prolong a division that's superimposed upon their history of deep connection.
