Daily Diary (DD) - Day 228 of 2022

Day 72 at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square - Dadyaal.

My punctuality deficit has neither decreased or increased today. It remains stable at 321 minutes. It almost seems as if time has stood still, after 72 days of punctuality practice.

Update 2057hrs:

Something very gory and irresponsible happened in Haveli, Poonch AJK about 5 hours ago. Here's the Facebook post released a few minutes earlier:

For the sake of those who do not delve into the FB post here's what I wrote:

The #PakistanArmy is in serious trouble in AJK.
About 5 hours ago it is reported that a Pakistani Army truck travelling through #Haveli #Poonch #AJK crushed a local - Zahid Badar Qureshi - to death before fleeing from the scene.
The public is in uproar and the local administration has yet to engage.

We have some bloody pictures of the scene too. We strongly feel the evidence must be in public for the sake of accountable governance - which we have yet to witness - since 1947:

Update at 2317hrs:

No criminal proceedings have been conducted yet and the local administration is still frozen. Unconfirmed reports are surfacing that the Pakistani army driver was inexperienced and incapable of handling the army truck. The public have continued to vent their anger towards the Pakistani army at Kacheri Chowk in Haveli.

Their chants:

Qaatil Qaatil! (Murderers Murderers!)

Fauj Qaatil! (Army Murderers) with obvious reference to the Pakistani army

Ye jo dehshat gardi hay (This terrorism)

Is ke peechay wardi hay (has a uniform behind it) with obvious reference to the Pakistani army's uniform

Ye jo maara maari hay (These killings and mayhem)

Is ke peechay wardi hay (have a uniform behind it) with obvious reference to the Pakistani army's uniform

Zaalimo jawaab do (Answer us oh oppressors)

Khoon ka hisaab do (give an account of the blood) you have spilled

Day 70 at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square - Dadyaal.

My punctuality deficit has decreased to 340 minutes.

I honestly didn't know it would be so but it was. Here's my first video upload of the day:

This was followed by another video update forwarded to JKTV:

Then a relatively more comprehensive video was uploaded to this writer's YouTube channel, which also incorporates all the footage hitherto reported above:

The day's proceedings did not finish here. The next appointment on this writer's schedule was participation in a highly distinguished online forum, hosted by Khurshid Uz Zaman Abbasi on his Washington (USA) based channel Zaman TV USA. The panel included a former chief justice of the AJK Supreme Court (Choudhary Ibrahim Zia), the foremost expert on the UN mechanism on JKA (Dr Nazir Gilani), a former additional chief secretary of AJK (Akram Sohail) and myself:

It didn't finish there! For a day that started just before 0700hrs has still not finished at 2300hrs! We remain in Washington for the following Twitter Space, hosted by Washington Group and which also includes world renowned activists:

Day 67 at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square - Dadyaal.

My punctuality deficit has decreased to 414 minutes.

I have managed to swing the deficit back to where it was a couple of days ago. It just so happens that I was 47 minutes late yesterday and by fantastic coincidence, I was 47 minutes early today. Until I don't bring the deficit back to zero, I will not achieve peace of mind.

Day 66 at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square - Dadyaal.

My punctuality deficit has increased to 461 minutes.

All those incremental improvements in punctuality over the couple of weeks have almost been washed away in one swoop, it seems. I didn't finish working till beyond 0500hrs and I couldn't get up till 0815hrs....

After a few days of progress I have slipped once again.

A backfooted 'rationalising' attitude displayed by - Pakistan's Advisor to the Prime Minister on Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan - or just another example of Pakistani legerdemain in Muzaffarabad?

We are certain that Qamar Zaman Kaira is working hard to downplay Pakistan's annexation attempt.

He describes the problem as an administrative one in terms of there being no clear link between AJK and the federation of Pakistan, in terms of administering the appropriate share of Pakistan's federal finance to AJK, as it isn't a province or a constitutional part of Pakistan. Further that the Pakistani prime minister as chairman of the (now advisory post 13th amendment) Kashmir Council is not a sufficient enough bridge.

Kaira is categorically saying that there is no intention to take back financial powers from the AJK government via the Kashmir Council (obtained via 13th amendment).

He is also categorically saying that there is no attempt to provincialise (or federalise) AJK.

Qamar Zaman Kaira describes the proposed (15th) amendment as a list of suggestions which required feedback from the AJK government, that it is open to revision and is of course subject to acceptance by the AJK Assembly.

He ends (this particular video clip) with an attempt to butter the audience by using the terminology 'special status' for AJK.

What we are saying is:

You need to de-link from us all together as siding with you (or any other country) is an automatic liability for the most sought after territory in the world. We can only prosper if we are independent. We cannot be independent unless we are neutral towards every other country on earth. The world will only believe us if we can provide a powerful enough ethical argument as to why this is a more meaningful alternative to regional occupation (China, India and Pakistan) and superpower contests between (China and USA).

Possessing world class water management technology and delivering religious harmony are 2 clues to this ethical argument.

As a footnote, we also understand that all other political parties in the AJK Legislative Assembly boycotted Qamar Zaman Kaira's visit to Muzaffarabad, except his own party, namely PPP (Pakistan People's Party).

Hajeera has on average - at least over the past few years - been the most active tehsil (subdivision) in AJK. In this video, the tehsil's women can also be seen leading the public rights rally:

Kotli has also registered itself on the anti-15th amendment radar:

Students in Muzaffarabad have also convened to chalk out their role in the current heated atmosphere:

In many senses, Haveli is our remotest district in AJK, not least because it juts out eastwards on the map leaving it surrounded on 3 sides by the Indian army. Despite its geographic peculiarity it hasn't been immune to the sentiment throughout the rest of AJK:

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 215 of 2022

Day 59 at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square - Dadyaal.

My punctuality deficit has decreased to 466 minutes.

This evening an all parties meeting took place in the Square in Dadyaal and I was also invited but as is normal with the organisers of the event (local members of JKNAP), I wasn't invited to speak. Which is fine in normal circumstances but when the organisers pretend to give you importance after the event, you recognise that they are practicing legerdemain, just like the Pakistani occupiers they are supposedly struggling to evict from this territory.

I also remember to put matters in context. After all, such people and their forbears practiced a similar attitude with K. H. Khursheed and Maqbool Bhat while they were alive, before eulogising them endlessly after their deaths.  That is: to marginalise sincere activists while they are alive and pretend that you are playing a more instrumental role than them - despite the former giving their all - while you only make your presence felt at opportune moments to maximise your visibility and provide the perception that it is you that is giving your all.

Obviously, when sincere activists die then they no longer make you uncomfortable and you are no longer competing with them. Now, the path is clear for you to eulogise them and further your own political aspirations.

I haven't written the above to vent my frustrations but to describe to my people and the rest of the world that how hard genuine activism is in the most precious territory in the world. On a practical basis, this is more difficult to overcome than the various hurdles that the occupiers use to stall our struggle, which in itself is a long list of ugly tactics.

The 'All Parties Peoples Rights Forum' that emerged in district Poonch has also extended to our southern-most district, namely Bhimber:

Total bazaar (market-place) shut-down (what our people describe as shutter-down) in Bagh:

An important convention also took place in Gilgit today under the aegis of the 'Awaami Action Committee' which involved representatives from all 10 districts of Gilgit Baltistan:

Day 58 at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square - Dadyaal.

My punctuality deficit has decreased to 478 minutes.

Priceless content. You are what you eat is that old adage:

Dr Nazir Gilani under the banner of his NGO affiliated to the United Nations - namely Jammu Kashmir Council for Human Rights (JKCHR) - has energetically been calling to question the merit of Pakistan's attempt to annex AJK into its federation, under the guise of the 15th amendment. He has addressed this latest letter to Pakistan's cabinet committee:

Meanwhile, the following tweet provides a comprehensive message:

Translation of above tweet:

There has been a total shut-down of business in Pakistani-administered Kashmir (specifically Rawalakot and other areas) today. This is a very clear message for all those thugs who want to trade the State (of Jammu Kashmir). (The State of) Pakistan should open its eyes fully and see that at no level will we compromise with the identity of the State (of Jammu Kashmir).

Our Resources, Your Occupation

(Is) Not Acceptable, (Is) Not Acceptable

Video footage of scenes in Rawalakot today can be observed courtesy JKTV:

Translation of the video intro above:

(A huge rally in aid of) Jammu Kashmir National Awami Party (JKNAP) president Liaqat Hayat and other political prisoners (was taken out by the public of Rawalakot) protesting against the arrest and police violence (against their co-citizens). (Further, the public is seething) against (regularly) imposed electricity (power) cuts, cruel taxes on electricity bills, the proposed 15th constitutional amendment (to annex AJK), the (proposed) tourism act and against the excessive (luxury) facilities (provided via our taxes) to our bureaucrats and politicians.

This activity was co-ordinated by the All Azad Kashmir Trader's Association which conducted a shut-down of all businesses throughout the Poonch division (which has 4 districts). All trade was suspended and all shops remained closed. A historic rally was taken out (through the city of Rawalakot) under the supervision of the Rawalakot Trader's Association and led by Abdul Naeem Khan.

End of translation....

Here's are some scenes of the shut-down in Palandri, where Qari Naseer of JKLF is in his element, taking the Pakistani army to task:

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 213 of 2022

Day 57 at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square - Dadyaal.

My punctuality deficit has decreased to 490 minutes.

I did venture out to the Square in the afternoon once again - after a break of 2 days - to express solidarity with all our political prisoners; including those of JKNAP, JKNSF and others. However, I forgot to take a customary picture on entry.

It is the first day of August, a memorable month over the years for us in Jammu Kashmir & Allied areas (JKA). The number 47 and the words forced, fortification and other less pleasant words come to mind in Dadyaal AJK, at the minute.

Then I decide to transport the above to another social medium, as a tweet:

It is obvious that the Pakistanis have thrown caution to the wind:

The following is an example of how the Pakistanis try to hoodwink the world on Jammu Kashmir:

A Scottish activist - Claire Bidwell - who has been vigorously, sincerely and wholeheartedly campaigning for a just and democratic solution to the 'Kashmir Issue' - effectively soon after India swooped to annex its controlled part of JKA into its federation on August the 5th 2019 - has been spun a yarn by the Pakistanis that if the inhabitants of JKA vote to accede to them, then they will give them the right to be independent, which they argue is otherwise unavailable!

How they've treated us (in terms of trying to control our thoughts to extracting our resources) over the past 75 years is more indicative of their behaviour and intent. Their words have a repetitive pattern to it, viz. promise the world to a people by exploiting their religious sentiments and then exploit their land & resources to your heart's desire.

This was precisely her question to me:

"Am I right in thinking that in the Pakistan constitution they do say that if there is a bilateral vote they will then give Kashmiris the vote?"

Before I post my response, here is the exact wording of the 'carrot' in question:

Article 257: Provision relating to the State of Jammu and Kashmir

"When the people of the State of Jammu and Kashmir decide to accede to Pakistan, the relationship between Pakistan and the State shall be determined in accordance with the wishes of the people of that State."

My response:

No, that is their spin. What is written is what should be read word for word in Article 257 of the Pakistani constitution.

It is like saying, you must join us in order for us to allow you to be what you want to be.

Any sane person would respond by saying that I'd rather be what I am without your interference and why should I take the risk of joining you in order to be what I already am?

Our State was independent before Pakistan invaded us in 1947 and dishonoured an agreement they made with the ruler (Maharajah), who made this agreement to protect his State's independence.

The Pakistani invasion facilitated the Indian entry which was made under a fresh agreement with the Maharajah which the Indians did not follow through, blaming Pakistan for their interference.

Thus, the inhabitants were straight-jacketed by this British colonial designed railway track, whereby on one side of the track are Indian allegations against Pakistan and on the other side are Pakistani allegations against India.

These mutual allegations and cross LOC firing have proved a ruse to solidify India and Pakistan's presence in JKA.

20% of the animosity generated between Hindus and Muslims led to India's division and 80% of the animosity generated by India and Pakistan amongst the inhabitants of Jammu & Kashmir has kept our territory divided, to the convenience of India and Pakistan and at our peril.

This 80/20 railway track designed and implemented by colonial Britain in JKA needs to be understood in order to resolve this well-designed conflict; that immediately and ultimately benefited the United Kingdom, kept India and Pakistan relatively poor and ensured that the people of JKA enjoyed no rights whatsoever for 75 years.
