Daily Diary (DD) - Day 267 of 2025

1418hrs:

Countdown to end of 2025: 99 days

The morning walk on an empty stomach straight after waking from a good night's sleep was achieved for the second day in a row.

Waking up in Rawalakot.

....

Upon request, a nasty but common example of how writers (writers, journalists, academics etc.) in the Vale of Kashmir are targeted, is presented below:

Young Scientist and Author Suhail Ibn Shahnawaz Faces Ban After Bold Book on Kashmir’s Future

Kulgam, Kashmir — Suhail Ibn Shahnawaz, a young scientist and author from Kashmir, has recently stirred both admiration and controversy with the release of his latest book addressing peace and politics in the Valley. Known for his academic brilliance and research contributions, Shahnawaz ventured into authorship with a courageous attempt to highlight the pressing concerns of Kashmiri youth.

In his book, he explores pathways toward sustainable peace in Kashmir, while critically analysing how political structures and vested interests have impacted generations of young people. With a blend of scientific reasoning, social understanding and personal observation, the work seeks to offer constructive dialogue rather than division.

However, the bold narrative has not been received well by certain political quarters. Reports suggest that local political figures moved swiftly to suppress the circulation of the book, resulting in an unofficial ban. According to sources, the book’s critical stance on political families and power dynamics in the region is the key reason behind the clampdown.

Despite this setback, Suhail Ibn Shahnawaz’s voice continues to resonate among Kashmir’s youth, many of whom see him as a rare figure combining scientific insight with social courage. Supporters argue that silencing intellectual perspectives only deepens the Valley’s wounds, while Shahnawaz himself remains committed to knowledge-sharing and dialogue.

Observers note that his case raises broader questions about freedom of expression, intellectual independence, and the challenges faced by young thinkers in conflict-affected societies. As his work circulates informally, the ban has only amplified interest, sparking debates across academic, political and social circles.

For many, Suhail Ibn Shahnawaz represents a new generation determined not just to study the universe as scientists, but also to illuminate the human struggles closer to home.

Suhail Ibn Shahnawaz
Srinagar, J&K

..

Here is a brief excerpt from the above referenced book:

KASHMIR
GENOCIDE
The Dark Truth
We want Modi here?

Genocide is not only when blood is shed;
it is when dreams are silenced, when
hopes are buried, and when fear
becomes the only language a people are
allowed to speak.”

..

I received a response from a European political scientist familiar with the region. This is what he had to say:

I do not know  Suhail Ibn Shahnawaz’s book, unfortunately, so I cannot comment on it.

"Reports suggest that local political figures moved swiftly to suppress the circulation of the book, resulting in an unofficial ban. According to sources, the book’s critical stance on political families and power dynamics in the region is the key reason behind the clampdown."

Without knowing the contents, I might only suspect that the author may be critical of local power structures and rightly so. This has been a serious problem of Kashmir since 1947: its politics and political exchange of ideas has been hijacked by a handful of political clans who has hold on the grip of power most of the time. In other words, they have monopolised the political discourse till date.

Their grip of power is certainly linked to financial privileges and direct/indirect business opportunities, in a way creating an semi oligarchical system of politics and business, from which they profit. An external criticism coming from circles unrelated to that oligarchical system can easily be perceived as a threat to their existence and personal influences, perhaps even as more dangerous than Indian domination in many cases.

It remains to be seen to what extent Suhail Ibn Shahnawaz’s ideas reflect the real sentiments of the youth. If they do, and if they also impact the youth (as a kind of feedback circuit), they may contribute to a kind of ‘rebellion’ of the sort faced in Bangladesh, Nepal, Morocco, Madagascar etc. in last several months.

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 230 of 2025

1454hrs:

Another day at home after feeling exhausted from 2 days of relatively intense travelling, given that I'd just come out of a 6 day hunger strike not much more than a week ago.

This is time for the family as well as time for improving the 20 year old independent research record.

....

Wherever important documentation is released or published by anybody related to this territory, I do make a point of documenting it for the public record.

Here are a few important examples for today:

1) Press Release Rawalakot Arrests

The United Kashmir People's National Party (UKPNP) strongly condemns the arrest and torture of peaceful protesters in Rawalakot, Poonch (PoJK).

Peaceful protest, freedom of association, peaceful assembly, freedom of expression, and the right to self-determination are fundamental human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), including:

- Article 19 – Freedom of opinion and expression
- Article 20 – Right to peaceful assembly and association
- Article 5 – Protection from torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment
- Article 9 – Protection from arbitrary arrest, detention or exile
- Article 1 – All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights
- Article 21 – Right to take part in government and express political will

The arrests and torture of individuals who were peacefully chanting slogans such as “We want freedom,” “No to accession,” and “Kashmir humara chhor do” are clear violations of these international laws and principles. Such oppressive tactics cannot silence dissent or suppress the legitimate aspirations of the people.

UKPNP will raise this issue at all international forums, including the United Nations, and demands the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees.

United Kashmir People's National Party (UKPNP)

..

2) Condemnation of Human Rights Violations in POJK: Call for International Intervention

Date: 17 August 2025

On 13 August 2025, a volleyball match organized by the Poonch Volleyball Association in Pakistan-Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (POJK) turned into a scene of political repression and violence.

Political figures, including MLA Hassan Ibrahim and Tahir Anwar Advocate, incited the crowd with political slogans. When spectators peacefully raised slogans affirming their Kashmiri identity, police—acting on the direct orders of these leaders—launched baton charges, tear gas shelling, and arbitrary arrests. The following day, false FIRs were registered, and a search campaign against innocent civilians was initiated.

This is a gross violation of fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and protection from arbitrary detention. Such actions silence the voices of Kashmiris and deepen mistrust in the region.

We Demand:

Immediate and unconditional release of all detainees.

An end to harassment and intimidation of civilians.

Accountability of politicians and officials who ordered these unlawful actions.

International monitoring of the situation in POJK.

We call on the United Nations, human rights organizations, and the global community to urgently intervene and hold those responsible accountable.

Justice, dignity, and freedom are the rights of every citizen — the people of Jammu & Kashmir must not be silenced through force.

Issued by
Umar Hayat Spokesman Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front.

(Notes: The timeline for this press release was yesterday but as I saw it today, it is being incorporated on today's date. This faction of the JKLF is led by Sardar Sagheer Khan)

..

3) Subject: Urgent International Appeal to Save the Life of Mr. Yasin Malik

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am compelled to draw your urgent attention to the case of Mr. Yasin Malik, Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), who has been convicted under a process that raises serious concerns about fairness, transparency, and compliance with international human rights standards.

Mr. Malik’s 13-year-old daughter, Ms. Razia Sultana, has appealed to the conscience of the international community to save her father from imminent execution. This appeal goes beyond one individual case—it concerns the fundamental principles of justice, human dignity, and the protection of political freedoms in conflict-affected regions.

Under Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the right to life is protected as a supreme human right. The imposition of the death penalty following a trial that does not meet international standards of fairness violates Article 14 of the ICCPR, which guarantees the right to a fair and impartial hearing.

Moreover, Article 19 of the ICCPR upholds the right to freedom of opinion and expression, which includes peaceful political expression such as that exercised by Mr. Malik throughout his political career.

The execution of a political leader under questionable judicial circumstances risks silencing dissenting voices and undermining the democratic principles that the United Nations and the international community strive to uphold. It may also escalate tensions in an already volatile region, thereby threatening international peace and security, contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter (Articles 1 and 55).

I therefore respectfully urge your good office to:

1. Intervene with the Government of India to halt the execution of Mr. Yasin Malik;
2. Ensure that he is afforded his right to a fair, transparent, and impartial trial in                        accordance with international standards;
3. Send an independent fact-finding mission or engage relevant UN Special Rapporteurs         to monitor and report on his case;
4. Safeguard his life and uphold the principles of justice, human rights, and the rule of            law.

This is an urgent matter of human rights protection and international legal obligation. The world must not allow injustice to be carried out under the shadow of legality.

Sincerely,

(Your Full Name)

(Your Country)

(Note: The above sample letter has also been released by the JKLF, albeit a different faction led by Raja Haq Nawaz - as stand-in chairman)

Ultimately, I'll return to a major theme emerging from my 2 decade old continuous research:

If you want freedom and are willing to take the responsibility then you must set your own terms and conditions between yourselves (Riyasati Baashindey).

The following photo and note in Urdu has been written by a co-citizen of mine. I have shared it to provide some context to how some or even many of my co-citizens perceive my work:

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 108 of 2024

0517hrs:

Yes, I have got up at 0500hrs sharp for 2 days in a row! It isn't easy getting into this groove but the best achievements in life are never easy. I did make it to bed at 2345hrs yesterday and a despite a couple of hiccups along the way I did get a better quality of sleep compared to yesterday. My total aggregate of sleep so far today has been about 5 hours. I may crash for an hour in the afternoon to make up the 6 hours needed for the day and hopefully will not extend it to 4 hours like yesterday.

Onwards and upwards as many have said....

....

However, it didn't turn out to be quite onwards and upwards yet as I began feeling drowsy at 1000hrs and felt compelled to rest. This 'rest' kept me separated from the world till 1800hrs. Thus. 5 hours at night + 8 hours in the afternoon = 13 hours in total. I have to struggle harder.

....

The following is an interesting development in AJK, given the standard of freedom of expression in this territory:

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 336 of 2022

1040hrs:

Day 180 at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square - Dadyaal.

0800hrs

Attendance = 100%

Punctuality = 64%

116 days on time or early of 180

Punctuality surplus = 28 minutes

Punctuality Consistency Status = 12 days

Note: Today's photo was taken a few metres before reaching the Square, solely to ensure that I didn't break my punctuality performance by a few seconds, as has happened on some previous occasions. I did have the option of hitching a pillion ride to arrive at the Square a few minutes before 0800hrs but I wanted to maintain the habit of walking the distance from home.

....

A snapshot history lesson that still directly affects us today in Jammu Kashmir & Allied areas (JKA):

The comment that I left there:

A very sharp and concise analysis. Should be part of the history curriculum in the United Kingdom and throughout all those territories that it ever controlled, including those where it still holds influence.

I also felt the following part of the commentary in the video was important too:

(Paraphrased)

"Britain went and ruled territories through proclamation rather than treaties...with the usual narrative that they came to civilise the locals..."

....

The following is an acute example of the legacy of British colonialism:

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 219 of 2022

1952hrs:

Day 63 at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square - Dadyaal.

0804hrs

My punctuality deficit has increased to 451 minutes.

I have slipped once again, though by just a few minutes. The good news is that I am slipping less often than not.

....

Tonight's live Twitter space conducted by JKTV was packed with various MLAs (Members of the Legislative Assembly) including Choudhary Yasin, Sardar Attique, Hasan Ibrahim, Shah Ghulam Qadir and Raja Farooq Haider. It also had Dr Nazir Gilani to provide the much needed - yet hitherto - absent legal compass for both politicians and the listening public alike:

Of course, I did make my contribution too albeit about 2 hours and 54 minutes into the programme. For very compelling reasons I thought it opportune to bring Raja Farooq Haider off his 'high horse' and amongst other objections to his conversation I described him as 'guilty' and 'undemocratic'. Previous to my input he had answered some questions put by the public but considered it prudent to 'flee the scene' during my conversation.

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 208 of 2022

1846hrs:

Day 52 at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square - Dadyaal.

0744hrs

My punctuality deficit has decreased to 540 minutes.

If I keep this up, I will get there.

....

In the afternoon began another sit-in protest at this very square. JKNAP and their student wing JKNSF have various members (c. 24) including their president Liaqat Hayat in jail for struggling for their basic rights. They intend to conduct this sit-in protest between 1600hrs and 2000hrs (4 to 8pm) every day. Their demands as written in the following Urdu banner are:

1) To end all taxes on electricity bills.
2) To provide free electricity to the inhabitants of 'Kashmir'.
3) To unconditionally release all political prisoners including Liaqat Hayat, Javed Jaan, Samad Shakeel and the president of the trader's association in Thorar Saajid Azam.
4) To restore subsidy on flour and end inflation.

For the record, this was my second visit to the square today and hence I consider it appropriate that I provide a timed snapshot of my entry here too:

....

While we wait for other media outlets throughout the globe to sprinkle some attention on our woes, the following article by an Indian news outlet - News Intervention - has taken some initiative once again. It should come as no surprise that their website cannot be directly accessed from Pakistan or its controlled territories:

....

The other side of the coin is that India has banned JKTV since February 2020:

We have sent the following message to the Indian government:

In the spirit of open information for all leads to solutions for all, India should lift its restrictions on JKTV.

Whoever has the most productive narrative for JKA should emerge as guide for governance and public policy.

Otherwise IndoPak acrimony will continue to slow down civilisational needs in this region.

AJK Public Agency Note #004427072022

End of note....

Meanwhile, anybody who tries to open JKTV in India or in its controlled territories will probably receive the following message:

....

You can sense how critical the situation is in AJK from the following tweets:

Remaining in Poonch (which has always been the epicentre of public resistance) but moving from Thorar to Kaigalla: it is important for the sake of the Pakistani army that they don't end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. We want them to leave our territory peacefully, by phased arrangement and with dignity; if possible:

....

Various social media platforms keep us engaged and Twitter Spaces is no exception. This morning I engaged in yet another space hosted by JKTV:

While the discussion above was concentrated on Yasin Malik's incarceration, hunger strike and subsequent hospitalisation; the noble lady featured below thought it opportune to discuss the alleged 'benevolence' of the Pakistani State, even at this very late stage when Pakistan is hell bent on emulating - India's 5 August 2019 operation - to consolidate AJK into Pakistan's federation. Hypocrisy must have its limits and hence we've featured her, so that we can try and avoid being stung by fake religious sentiment every time we step forward to claim our rights:

This is what I wrote after the programme:

This sister of ours Rehana Ali

conducted a zealous propaganda campaign against me while I was in jail (Flag case Mirpur 2020/21) and is using the same references that she rejected about me to speak up for Yasin Malik in jail!

How much of the following can she & other zealous pro-Pakistani propagandists grasp?

Pakistan is a hard-wired endemically corrupt country and society, that uses Islam as a currency to practice hypocrisy by default, for usually very short-term bestial benefits.

No doubt there are good and forthright people there too but they are a very small and almost invisible minority, for all practical purposes.

We can no longer tolerate Pakistanis or those who favour JKA's or Kashmir's accession to Pakistan; to use international legal references to try and:

1) Twist arguments in their favour while omitting important information. Telling part of a true story and concealing those truths which prove their complicity or failures.

2) Feigning sympathy for others while deceiving them. Pretending to donate while looting the other. Advertising their supposed generosity while stifling, ridiculing or threatening those who calculate their loot.

3) The human rights they claim to campaign for are the very human rights they deny to their own people - let alone us - while we are their neighbours who have extended all liberties and benefit to them for 75 years, thinking they are our Muslim siblings fighting for the Ummah. They fooled the people of Hindustaan pre 1947 by stressing that Islam is in danger when the slogan 'Muslims are in danger' did not work. For reference check Muslim League polling results in 1946 and those prior to raising the 'Islam in danger' slogan.

4) They teach us by rote to hate Hindus and Jews in particular while cosying up with anybody and everybody for their own marginal benefit, including Hindus and Jews.

Hence, my assertion that Pakistan has got to be the most significant conspiracy against Islam and Muslims in the past 1,500 years.

Further:

1) Pakistan is repeatedly trying to fool Allah the Almighty by repeatedly trying to fool Allah's most intelligent creation - humans - in the name of Allah.

2) Its existence thrives on hatred and conflict and has thus affected over 1.5 billion people of the Indian subcontinent and many others too, apart from its neighbours.

Note:

1) Criticising Pakistan does not mean we favour any other country in the world and think atrocities do not happen elsewhere. AJK Public Agency maintains geo-political neutrality in the strictest sense and would afford Pakistan every facility that it would offer any other country.

2) I'm simply narrating and warning of the implications of its existence in its current form. There's no reason why it cannot re-invent itself and play fair with its own people and the rest of humanity.

3) Using religion - and any religion for that matter - for selfish, lustful, spiteful or deceitful purposes has never sustained itself for long throughout history. It always ultimately fails because people get fed up of hearing the same 'divine' excuses to decades old unabating problems. Pakistan's debt crisis is one such example. Singapore produces more wealth than Pakistan despite being less than 1/1000th of its size and with a population less than 3% of Pakistan's.

4) This is a plea for introspection - especially for Muslims - many of who think condemning non-Muslim crimes and concealing Muslim crimes is a service to Islam. Many Muslims also think Muslim governments can necessarily provide better security, welfare, justice and opportunity to Muslims compared to non-Muslims. That non-Muslims are occupiers and Muslims are saviours, which has proved true in some cases historically but it is by no means a universal truth. What is truly fascinating is that even Western born and bred Muslims commonly hold such beliefs as above.

..

If I cannot convince my Muslim brother or sister about him or her denying my right to exist (read proposed 15th Amendment AJK) then how do I convince any level headed impartial observer that I have been exclusively denied my right to exist by non Muslims?

My Muslim brother and sister won't even let me speak because he or she conveniently pretends to be my advocate when he or she knows that I am a more able and fruitful advocate of my own condition.

Besides how can a dubious 'claimant' of a piece of land be an advocate of the 'titled' landholder?

How can you teach us to hate & kill (proxy propaganda & militancy) another 'claimant' while making love and mutually beneficial agreements with that other 'claimant', at the expense of the 'titled' landholders?

The Pakistani State's hypocrisy has come full circle. 75 years of this 2 nation experiment has generated ample empirical evidence to re-evaluate:

It is understood that the local administration is under increasing pressure to evict me from Martyr's Square Kotli. Today is Day 49. So, we need to be clear where all this 'heat' is coming from.

We also need to understand that we are on the precipice of permanent division of Jammu Kashmir & Allied areas (JKA).

Martyr's Square (Shaheed Chowk) Kotli is our last line of defence. If the public protects me, we will avoid division and continue travelling on the path of becoming amongst the top 10 economies of the world, with associated quality in governance.

If the public cannot hold Shaheed Chowk, we are staring down a dark barrel.

As I've increasingly intimated over the past few years, the responsibility of the UK Government in reference to Jammu Kashmir & Allied is not just a moral one, it is essentially legal too, which it has skillfully abdicated from, especially since it skillfully diverted our (the people's) 'right to rule' (Haq e Hukmrani) to one of a bilateral territorial dispute at the United Nations. Most of our people have been hoodwinked ever since and I'm glad that another legal mind has eloquently pointed this out for the likes of the Labour Party in the UK.
