Daily Diary (DD) - Day 225 of 2025

2221hrs:

Family imperatives kept me at home today. Otherwise, I was keen on giving time to Kotli courts and then proceeding to Dadyaal today.

....

On this day, an informative answer to a silly question emerged on Quora in relation to the availability of electricity in China. I'm reproducing the question and answer here too for its related importance to the territory of AJK in particular and JKA as a whole in general:

Question:

How do 90% of people in China have no access to electricity? How do they live?

Answer:

Spoiler alert: Far from sitting in the dark, China’s grid moves oceans of clean electricity from its remote west to its crowded east — the world’s biggest power migration.

Last year, 2.4 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity were transmitted from western China to the east, enough to power five Germanys.

More than 80% of that electricity came from clean, renewable sources, a result of China’s West-to-East Power Transmission Project, one of the most ambitious and transformative energy initiatives in the world today. Since its launch, the project has reshaped the nation’s energy landscape by channeling vast amounts of clean power from China’s resource-rich western regions to its densely populated and industrialized eastern coast — traveling thousands of kilometers, crossing mountains, deserts, rivers, and reaching over 500 million people in major cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Beijing.

The project was first formally proposed in the early 2000s and became a key part of China’s national development strategy in 2001. It was born from a structural imbalance: eastern China, home to the country’s most concentrated economic activity and highest electricity demand, lacks the space and natural conditions to generate large-scale renewable energy. Meanwhile, the western regions—Xinjiang, Qinghai, Yunnan, Inner Mongolia—are rich in solar, wind, and hydropower resources but historically lacked sufficient local demand and infrastructure to distribute this power nationally.

Inner Mongolia leads the country in wind power, with over 86 gigawatts of installed capacity, making it China’s largest wind energy base. In Qinghai, the Hainan Prefecture Ecological Solar Park—one of the largest solar farms in the world—spans the high-altitude plateau with 15 gigawatts of installed capacity. Meanwhile, Yunnan and Sichuan play a major role in hydropower generation, harnessing their fast-flowing rivers and rugged terrain.

In contrast, eastern cities, while being China’s economic powerhouse, are dense, industrial, and energy-hungry. Mega-regions like the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta are home to China’s most productive manufacturing hubs and urban centers. These areas have long relied on coal-fired power and, until recently, had limited access to the abundant renewable energy produced in the west, leaving much of it underutilized.

West-to-East power lines weave through Anhui’s morning mist and mountains.

This disconnect between where clean energy is produced and where it’s needed is not unique to China. Around the world, urban and coastal centers demand the most power but rarely have access to renewable-rich landscapes. China’s answer to this dilemma has been to physically connect the country through high-efficiency, long-distance electricity highways.

Closing this energy gap will benefit not only China, but also contributes to the world’s transition to cleaner energy.

What makes this power transfer possible is China’s development and deployment of ultra-high voltage (UHV) transmission technology. Unlike conventional power lines, UHV lines can carry electricity over thousands of kilometers with very little loss. China began investing in UHV research in the early 2000s and now holds over 80 percent of the world’s UHV-related patents. By the end of 2023, the West-to-East Power Transmission Project consists of 39 long-distance UHV corridors, creating an interconnected network that functions as the green arteries of the country’s power system.

Building on its domestic success, China also began sharing its UHV technology with the world.

Earlier this year, China State Grid’s Brazilian subsidiary officially kicked off a ±800 kV UHVDC transmission project in northeastern Brazil, marking State Grid’s 3rd overseas UHV transmission project. The project will integrate wind, solar, and hydropower from Brazil’s northeastern and northern regions, transmitting it through the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, and Goiás to supply electricity to Brasília and surrounding areas—serving a population of around 12 million.

These international projects not only demonstrate the technical reliability and efficiency of China’s UHV systems but also reflect a growing commitment to global energy connectivity and low-carbon development.

China’s West-to-East Power Transmission Project proves that clean energy doesn’t have to stay where it’s made. With the right mix of ambition, innovation, and infrastructure, renewable power can cross mountains, deserts, and megacities — lighting up entire nations. As the world searches for solutions to an accelerating climate crisis, China’s energy superhighway offers a bold blueprint for what’s possible.

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 43 of 2023

0805hrs:

Day 252 at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square - Dadyaal.

0628hrs

Attendance = 100%
Punctuality = 69%
175 days on time or early of 252
Punctuality surplus = 516 minutes
Punctuality Consistency Status = 17 days
Hours completed at Square = 408
Fast = Day 5 (1 day's break yesterday)

Note: Our break in the previous 24 hours was 7 hours (2 hours between 1030hrs and 1230hrs in the morning to shower and have breakfast - as opposed to break fast - and then 5 hours between 1500hrs to 2000hrs to relax on this day while others should have kept watch).

....

Yesterday evening, I just finished watching the following video on Tibet. It was watched in batches over a number of days, as part of a concerted bid to improve our time management performance:

I also made a point of leaving a comment, as has become customary and necessary after investing 50 or so minutes on this video. Of course, it relates to water management and geopolitical neutrality as much as our territory does, if not more so:

Comment:

A wonderfully informative insight into the actual rooftop of the world. I was specifically intrigued by the research into cosmic rays and how the Chinese are striving - quite candidly - to gain an edge over other nations/powers, by trying to tap into their energy potential.

Meanwhile, I thought a little more could have been added about the region's ecological fragility and major fresh water source of the world.

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 211 of 2018

0654hrs:

I have just been trying to complete some work for one of the very few people in this territory, who have staked their all for public interest here: Mahmood Ahmed Musafir

In the absence of a response from UNHCR: Mahmood, now into his 77th day of a hunger strike outside Islamabad Press Club, has asked me to send a letter to these 5 countries. Of course, he never wanted to leave his beloved motherland but he is almost convinced that his talent and skill will be wasted here. Only for our co-citizens to celebrate his death and eulogize him eternally. That is the custom thus far:

Here it is:

An Appeal for Parity in Opportunity for Aspiring Citizens throughout the World

This letter has been separately addressed to the ‘Heads of State’ of 5 countries of the world via their consulates in Islamabad - Pakistan

Namely:

1                                   Germany - Addressed to Her Excellency: Chancellor - Angela Merkel
2                                   Japan - Addressed to His Excellency: Emperor - Akihito
3                                   United Kingdom (UK) - Addressed to Her Majesty: Queen Elizabeth II
4                                   Philippines - Addressed to His Excellency: President Rodrigo Duterte
5                                   Malaysia - Addressed to His Excellency: King - Muhammad V of Kelantan

Your Excellency

We live in a territory which is constitutionally ambiguous as well as a conflict zone. Both these characteristics were imposed from outside and have endured for almost 71 years. Though the official title of this territory is Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) which translates to ‘The free part of the State of Jammu & Kashmir’, the only freedom available here is that which associates with no responsibility.

The point of addressing this letter to your country is to alert you to the personal quest of Mahmood Ahmed Musafir who has been a public rights activist in AJK for the past 34 years (since 1984). Every year he has conducted various creative activities to highlight prevailing issues in public interest throughout AJK. In the particular context of this letter, he has tried to convince the AJK government to invest in alternative electricity generation from wind and mechanical power, not least to resolve the persistent shortage of electricity in AJK and Pakistan.

As you will no doubt understand from the details below, there has been no will shown by the government of AJK or the State of Pakistan to pay due attention to what he has to offer. Hence, as he’s entering the twilight of his life he wishes for some thoughtful country to provide him the necessary environment, whereby he could utilise his skills to create alternative power generation. He would concentrate on wind and mechanical power without resorting to established methods such as water, diesel, petrol, gas, kerosene/paraffin, coal, solar power, atomic power, dry battery, sea waves and waste/rubbish.

This year, on the 27th of February Mahmood began a c. 300 kilometre walk from Bhimber (in the south of AJK to Muzaffarabad (in the north of AJK) with 3 donkeys and a camel in tow, to highlight the absence of governance and legislation in AJK. The donkeys pulled a cart which had a banner enlisting 32 demands in public interest:

The local government of AJK did engage with him on a couple of occasions but they expressed their helplessness, on account of all crucial powers vesting with the State of Pakistan. In between, they tried their best to avoid having to sit and talk with him.

Subsequently, Mahmood began an indefinite hunger strike outside Islamabad Press Club on the 14th of May. It has been 77 days (at the time of writing), though he is just taking liquids to sustain himself while refraining from solid food altogether. At no point did any representative of the Pakistani state do as much as visit him or enquire about his well-being. Meanwhile, he tried to engage with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) representative in Islamabad but found it difficult to maintain a conversation with them. Here are links to the communication that he had:

1) His first letter to them:

2) Their response:

3) His follow-up:

4) His as yet un-answered reminder to the follow-up letter:

In summary, the example of Mahmood Ahmed is not so unique, given the status of our territory. Anybody who has talent in any particular field is not able to develop themselves in a territory operating under constitutional ambiguity along with 2 neighbours fiercely contesting it, thus converting it into a conflict zone. As yet, there is no scope for genuine democracy, governance or human progress here in AJK.

We hope your country can provide a convenient environment for him to proceed in his pursuit to serve humanity, by assisting him to develop alternative energy via wind and mechanical power. A technology that our region can so desperately do with but where the structure of governance provides no scope for such endeavour, rather all they can do is to inhibit it.

Regards

Mahmood Ahmed
