Daily Diary (DD) - Day 230 of 2025

1454hrs:

Another day at home after feeling exhausted from 2 days of relatively intense travelling, given that I'd just come out of a 6 day hunger strike not much more than a week ago.

This is time for the family as well as time for improving the 20 year old independent research record.

....

Wherever important documentation is released or published by anybody related to this territory, I do make a point of documenting it for the public record.

Here are a few important examples for today:

1) Press Release Rawalakot Arrests

The United Kashmir People's National Party (UKPNP) strongly condemns the arrest and torture of peaceful protesters in Rawalakot, Poonch (PoJK).

Peaceful protest, freedom of association, peaceful assembly, freedom of expression, and the right to self-determination are fundamental human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), including:

- Article 19 – Freedom of opinion and expression
- Article 20 – Right to peaceful assembly and association
- Article 5 – Protection from torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment
- Article 9 – Protection from arbitrary arrest, detention or exile
- Article 1 – All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights
- Article 21 – Right to take part in government and express political will

The arrests and torture of individuals who were peacefully chanting slogans such as “We want freedom,” “No to accession,” and “Kashmir humara chhor do” are clear violations of these international laws and principles. Such oppressive tactics cannot silence dissent or suppress the legitimate aspirations of the people.

UKPNP will raise this issue at all international forums, including the United Nations, and demands the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees.

United Kashmir People's National Party (UKPNP)

..

2) Condemnation of Human Rights Violations in POJK: Call for International Intervention

Date: 17 August 2025

On 13 August 2025, a volleyball match organized by the Poonch Volleyball Association in Pakistan-Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (POJK) turned into a scene of political repression and violence.

Political figures, including MLA Hassan Ibrahim and Tahir Anwar Advocate, incited the crowd with political slogans. When spectators peacefully raised slogans affirming their Kashmiri identity, police—acting on the direct orders of these leaders—launched baton charges, tear gas shelling, and arbitrary arrests. The following day, false FIRs were registered, and a search campaign against innocent civilians was initiated.

This is a gross violation of fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and protection from arbitrary detention. Such actions silence the voices of Kashmiris and deepen mistrust in the region.

We Demand:

Immediate and unconditional release of all detainees.

An end to harassment and intimidation of civilians.

Accountability of politicians and officials who ordered these unlawful actions.

International monitoring of the situation in POJK.

We call on the United Nations, human rights organizations, and the global community to urgently intervene and hold those responsible accountable.

Justice, dignity, and freedom are the rights of every citizen — the people of Jammu & Kashmir must not be silenced through force.

Issued by
Umar Hayat Spokesman Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front.

(Notes: The timeline for this press release was yesterday but as I saw it today, it is being incorporated on today's date. This faction of the JKLF is led by Sardar Sagheer Khan)

..

3) Subject: Urgent International Appeal to Save the Life of Mr. Yasin Malik

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am compelled to draw your urgent attention to the case of Mr. Yasin Malik, Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), who has been convicted under a process that raises serious concerns about fairness, transparency, and compliance with international human rights standards.

Mr. Malik’s 13-year-old daughter, Ms. Razia Sultana, has appealed to the conscience of the international community to save her father from imminent execution. This appeal goes beyond one individual case—it concerns the fundamental principles of justice, human dignity, and the protection of political freedoms in conflict-affected regions.

Under Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the right to life is protected as a supreme human right. The imposition of the death penalty following a trial that does not meet international standards of fairness violates Article 14 of the ICCPR, which guarantees the right to a fair and impartial hearing.

Moreover, Article 19 of the ICCPR upholds the right to freedom of opinion and expression, which includes peaceful political expression such as that exercised by Mr. Malik throughout his political career.

The execution of a political leader under questionable judicial circumstances risks silencing dissenting voices and undermining the democratic principles that the United Nations and the international community strive to uphold. It may also escalate tensions in an already volatile region, thereby threatening international peace and security, contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter (Articles 1 and 55).

I therefore respectfully urge your good office to:

1. Intervene with the Government of India to halt the execution of Mr. Yasin Malik;
2. Ensure that he is afforded his right to a fair, transparent, and impartial trial in                        accordance with international standards;
3. Send an independent fact-finding mission or engage relevant UN Special Rapporteurs         to monitor and report on his case;
4. Safeguard his life and uphold the principles of justice, human rights, and the rule of            law.

This is an urgent matter of human rights protection and international legal obligation. The world must not allow injustice to be carried out under the shadow of legality.

Sincerely,

(Your Full Name)

Ultimately, I'll return to a major theme emerging from my 2 decade old continuous research:

The following photo and note in Urdu has been written by a co-citizen of mine. I have shared it to provide some context to how some or even many of my co-citizens perceive my work:

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 56 of 2022

1058hrs:

Day 37 at Martyr's Square Kotli

....

Today's wisdom is an analysis from one of my co-citizens about the behaviour of Pakistan and Kashmir:

Translation:

Pakistan has forgotten its worth

The State of Jammu Kashmir has forgotten its identity

History is witness that

those nations that forget their identity and their worth

are destroyed and ruined.

End of translation....

....

I had the honour of receiving a visit from Sardar Sagheer Khan - head of his own faction of the JKLF - today, despite the rain:

He and all his colleagues also registered their details on the census register and paid their dues.

Many thanks to all of them.

....

Some encouraging news from the United Kingdom.

It appears the NHS (National Health Service) has begun recognising the 'Kashmiri' community as a category among ethnic communities in the UK.

This should improve service delivery as well as give traction to 'Kashmiri' as a political identity.

This news was also broadcast on JKTV:

....

On the other hand, our university students throughout the territory of AJK - are being hounded and threatened with disciplinary action - for peaceful expression of their aspirations.

The following circular was released today by AJK University - Kotli, in response to students commemorating the hanging of Maqbool Bhat on the 11th of February:

....

The following video is an insight into public opinion in Gilgit Baltistan (GB). It isn't yet clear where and when this clip was captured (we are still trying to establish its origin) but it is obviously recent, as it has the most notable political ally of the ruling PTI government in Pakistan and GB waxing lyrical about Imran Khan's 'vision' and his wholehearted unreserved support for Pakistan's attempt to make GB a 'provisional' province of Pakistan on the 23rd of March 2022.

Khalid Khurshid is the 'Chief Minister' of Gilgit Baltistan.

As soon as he said that, there was an immediate reaction against this statement from the crowd around him, who began repeatedly chanting that a 'provisional' province is unacceptable!

....

I know that much of the world's media's focus is on Ukraine at the moment. I also know that all conflicts impact women and children more than anyone else. Conversely, peace pays most dividends to this very category of human kind:

....

So, the rest of the world should be able to sense the gap between public opinion and public policy. Specifically, why the people of JKA are still in bondage:

....

Even Raja Zafar ul Haq, 86 year old chairman of the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz faction is referring to the people of JKA. That is the public.

The public is public opinion.

A representative sample was comprehensively collected over 5 years - between 2011 and 2016 - throughout AJK.

It then took a further 9 months to extract a summary.

It has taken a further 5 years to publish the extended research notes and they cannot be published until an academic institution of global repute does not either:

1) Sift through my data and assess/critique the summary I published in July 2017.

2) Read the July 2017 summary and put relevant questions forward, to be answered in the extended research notes.

It is just that I have so much data - that I would need at least a couple of years un-interrupted - to prepare publication.

However, with appropriate questions by an academic institute of global repute, we can possibly complete that in less than 6 months, as it would narrow down what I would need to include.

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 308 of 2021

2322hrs:

Yet another version of JKLF - (Sagheer group) on this occasion - held its district convention in Kotli today. Their banners also made it clear that the people of this territory are against the permanent division strategy resulting from Indo-Pak bilateralism and created by colonial Britain.

Here's just one example of the strength they showed today:

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 263 of 2019

1224hrs:

Coverage of AJK and its internal narrative by global media has reached unprecedented and even hitherto unimaginable levels. Al Jazeera and BBC Urdu covered the Poonch LOC March by Sardar Sagheer Khan's faction of the JKLF which began on the 7th of September. The New York Times yesterday. India's The Wire the day before and today BBC Urdu has yet again offered a new piece of commentary on this side of Kashmir, controlled by Pakistan.

Its title can be translated as 'Who talks of Kashmir's Independence in Pakistan?':

n.b. The title can be a bit misleading as the discussion is about AJK or Pakistani-controlled Kashmir and not Pakistan per se.

Here's an abridged video covering the same theme:

.......

A lesson on nationalism in the context of AJK:

Then there is geographic nationalism such as ours which is based on the concentration of resources in a territory desperately needed by all its neighbours. Such that it is a matter of life or death - water. It shares the concerns of liberal nationalism too.

Averting future conflict over water while preservIng the environment must be the responsibility of a nation State as that is the configuration of the world and the sole currency of global institutions. Whenever the world evolves to a different configuration, J & K will adapt too.

The reformation of this legally sovereign entity is being achieved through civic nationalism and citizens in all divided parts of the State have contributed to this emerging internal political process.

It is necessary that we take responsibility for water, soil and waste management in Jammu & Kashmir, that along with a modern, representative real-time procedure for making our public interest decisions will help us engage with the world meaningfully and practically.

Thank you.....written by Tanveer Ahmed in response to:

Nationalism, introduction and Types

Nationalism is the doctrine that one's national culture and interests are superior to any other, and that nations should act independently (rather than collectively) to attain their goals. It holds that a nation, usually defined in terms of language, ethnicity or culture, has the right to constitute an independent or autonomous political community based on a shared history and common destiny. It can also refer to the aspiration for national independence felt by people under foreign domination.

Nationalism seeks to order the world as a series of nation-states, each based on the geopolitical national homeland of its respective nation, and holds that each nation has a moral entitlement to a sovereign state. It seeks to guarantee the continued existence of a nation, to preserve its distinct identity, and to provide a territory where the national culture and ethos are dominant. In turn, nation-states appeal to a national cultural-historical mythos to justify their existence, and to confer political legitimacy.

Simplistically, Nationalism is the desire of a nation to self-determination. It is usually associated with patriotism (a positive and supportive attitudes to a "fatherland"), but it can also lead to chauvinism (aggressive patriotism, or blind or biased devotion to any group, attitude or cause), imperialism, racism and xenophobia, militarism, or ultimately to Fascism.

It is usually considered a relatively recent idea, based as it is on the concept of the nation-state which is a largely 19th Century phenomenon and, until around 1800, very few people had more than local loyalties. National identity and unity were originally imposed from above by European states, in order to modernize the economy and society.

Types of Nationalism

Nationalism may manifest itself along civic, ethnic, cultural, religious or ideological lines. These self-definitions of nations are used to classify different types of Nationalism, although such categories are not mutually exclusive and many nationalist movements combine some or all of these elements to varying degrees.

Ethnic Nationalism:

Where the nation is defined in terms of ethnicity and descent from previous generations. It also includes the idea of a culture shared between members of the group, and usually a shared language.

Civic Nationalism:

Where the state derives political legitimacy from the active participation of its citizenry and from the degree to which it represents the "will of the people".

State Nationalism:

A variant of Civic Nationalism, where the nation is assumed to be a community of those who contribute to the maintenance and strength of the state, and that the individual exists in the community expressly to contribute to this goal. This often results in Fascism.

Expansionist Nationalism:

A radical form of imperialism (and not really true Nationalism at all) that incorporates autonomous, patriotic sentiments with a belief in expansionism, usually by military aggression, e.g. Nazism (or Nationalist-Socialism) in Germany.

Romantic Nationalism:

A form of Ethnic Nationalism in which the state derives political legitimacy as a natural (or "organic") consequence and expression of the nation. It relies upon the existence of a historical ethnic culture which meets the romantic ideal (folklore developed as a Romantic Nationalist concept).

Cultural Nationalism:

Where the nation is defined by shared culture, and neither purely civic nor purely ethnic. Chinese nationalism is an example of Cultural Nationalism, partly because of the many national minorities within China.

Third World Nationalism:

Where nationalist sentiments result from resistance to colonial domination in order to survive and retain a national identity.

Liberal Nationalism:

Where it is claimed that individuals need a national identity in order to lead meaningful, autonomous lives, and that liberal democracies need national identity in order to function properly. John Stuart Mill expressed similar sentiments.

Religious Nationalism:

Where a shared religion can be seen to contribute to a sense of national unity, and a common bond among the citizens of the nation.

Pan-Nationalism:

Where Ethnic or Cultural Nationalism applies to a nation which is itself a cluster of related ethnic groups and cultures (such as the Turkic peoples).

Diaspora Nationalism:

Where there is nationalist feeling among a diaspora, (an ethnic population living outside their traditional homelands) e.g. the Irish in the United States, the Jews in the United States and elsewhere, etc.

Stateless Nationalism:

Where an ethnic or cultural minority within a nation-state seeks independence on nationalist grounds (e.g. the Catalans and Basques in Spain).

National Conservatism:

A political term, used primarily in Europe, to describe a variant of Conservatism which concentrates more on national interests than standard Conservatism, while not being unduly Nationalist or pursuing an excessively far-right agenda.

....

In response to my explanation of nationalism in the context of AJK, the following comments in response were useful:

Comment 1:
But one thing I must say, strongest nationalism prevailing in AJK is Jatt, Raja, Gujjar and Sudhan Nationalism

My response:
That is very true to a certain extent as many of our people vote or supposedly support public interest ventures under such influences, which can be described as tribal nationalism. Indeed senior members of our diaspora who have lived in liberal democracies like the UK for decades still practice tribal nationalism when making political choices.

Comment 2:
Don't you think this movement should be above religion because the Pakistani government is playing religion card?

My response:
I think we have to think like humans without labels to solve the problems of humanity. We all live in the same world and have to find common solutions to common problems. We have to save our geography. We cannot allow it to be Buddhist, Christian, Hindu or Muslim geography. Neither can it be Shia or Sunni..or...

The State is a system. It requires ingenuity, efficiency and order to operate...not religious sentiments...they can be channeled in prayer or charity...

Comment 3:
Yeah probably we can say that to give confidence to our non MUSLIM Natives of Jammu and Kashmir. But in a Muslim dominant society, don’t you think we have to implement Islamic Rule of law. Where as Islam is a complete social system which provides full protection to minorities?

My response:
If only non Muslims would accept that, which they won't and many Muslims wouldn't either. Remember water belongs to everybody...it would be impossible to make efficient use of it if you can't agree on a set of rules.

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 258 of 2019

2101hrs:

We are getting increasingly concerned at the witch-hunt being conducted by the AJK police in Muzaffarabad of public activists, under the watchful eye and mentoring of Pakistan's roving clandestine agencies.

Kamran Mughal who was most vociferous at raising slogans in favour of Jammu & Kashmir's independence on the Pakistani prime minister's visit is reported missing:

Kamran was last seen in this video made yesterday (the 14th of September):

It should also be noted that Kamran's brother and brother in law were also picked up by the AJK police under instructions from Pakistan's agencies yesterday morning. They were detained all day and reportedly tortured so that they may disclose the whereabouts of Kamran. In the evening they were released after civil society intervened.

Meanwhile, 21 year old Khwaja Mujtaba Bandey remains in custody while the 7 other detainees have been released. He and I spent a week together in Sharda this summer, even scaling the heights of Narda Lake at 15,000 feet. He is into his 3rd night of incarceration today:

The Pakistani State must be held accountable for creating friction between the AJK police and the public. For showing a 'strong hand' in Muzaffarabad where reports of torture under the instruction and supervision of Pakistan's roving agencies have emerged. Equipment of the earlier detained and released has been allegedly confiscated by them too.

As usual, the police and administration in AJK regret their helplessness in having to obey 'orders from above', from shadows that have no legal writ in this territory.

.....

Meanwhile, this afternoon a meeting took place in Rawalakot between civil society and the Poonch administration in reference to the 37 activists. detained since the 7th of September.

Here's a translation of the Urdu report on the discussion, written by Haaris Qadeer:

- The Gvernment has announced that it will withdraw all cases
- It has decided to unconditionally release the 'Freedom March' prisoners

Rawalakot - Mujaadala News

The government has announced that it has withdrawn all cases against the participants of the Freedom March (and subsequent sit-in protest at Tithrinote on the 7th of September) and decided to unconditionally release all those detained. These decisions were made by a co-ordination committee headed by the minister of information (in the AJK Assembly) Mushtaq Minhas.

This emerged after a 2 and a half hour discussion between representatives of the AJK government and a civil society delegation led by Chairman Liberation Front (JKLF) Sardar Muhammad Sagheer Khan Advocate. Amongst the government's representatives were Information Minster Mushtaq Minhas, local MLA Sagheer Chugtai, former minister Sardar Tahir Anwar, representative of JKPP (Jammu Kashmir People's Party) Asad Ibrahim and DG Political Affairs to prime minister Malik Zulfiqar. Others were present too whereas accompanying Chairman Liberation Front Sardar Muhammad Sagheer Khan Advocate were former presidents of NSF (National Students Front) Basharat Ali Khan, Tauseef Khaliq and journalist Haaris Qadeer.

Prime minister Raja Farooq Haider also talked via telephone with Sardar Muhammad Sagheer Khan Advocate during the discussion. On the directions of the prime minister the government announced that it was withdrawing all cases and hence decided to release all prisoners unconditionally.

SSP Poonch was reprimanded for his professional misconduct and it was decided that the government would form a departmental inquiry to investigate this matter. In consequence, Chairman Liberation Front (Sagheer Khan) decided to call off protests in other districts and announced that the ensuing protest in Rawalakot would convert itself into a welcoming rally (for the  Freedom March prisoners).

Commissioner Poonch Choudhary Muhammad Raqeeb and Deputy Commissioner (DC) were also present on this ocassion, who upon the AJK prime minister's orders assured that they would immediately implement the instructions given.

End of translation of report....

This meeting ended at 1700hrs (5pm). However, by midnight the 37 prisoners had yet to be released.

This sounds like its travelling in the right direction, indeed it even validates my focal point about this being the end of Indo-Pak bilateralism in Jammu & Kashmir. A process I've been arguing against since my Rising Kashmir days in 2011:

If you can't read the text in the post above, here it is:

Speaking with the PM of “Azad” Kashmir this afternoon. He says the dispute is between India and the people of Kashmir and that Pakistan has no claim on the territory. Hence it cannot be resolved as a bilateral issue.

So said Phillip Bennion, a British liberal democrat MEP (Member of European Parliament) for the West Midlands. Though I would maintain that this is a pertinent matter for the UK parliament.

Here it is:

It was also logged on this very day in my daily diary. Here's the direct link:

Now, since this recent interest in the video - generated by the Indian news agency ANI - I know Sardar Sagheer Khan has been confronted with a lot of criticism for 'giving' news to the Indians while so many of our Muslim brethren are under virtual lock down for over 20 days.

A few points are important to note here:

1) The date of the interview compared to when ANI reported it.
2) Pakistan should refrain from such acts which nullify its own stance and give ample opportunity to India to take advantage of.
3) More important than the Pakistanis handing the Indian narrative a clear victory, is the damage that infiltration does to our social fabric in AJK and the consequences of further marginalisation of the internal narrative here, which does not correspond with Pakistan's narrative.
4) The Indians should realise that there are always 2 sides to a coin. You cannot emulate what the Pakistanis do viz. twist information to suit your respective nationalist narrative while drowning out the genuine internal narrative of AJK. Thereby claiming moral victory.
5) In the interest of humanity, media ethics, civilisational progress and conflict resolution; Indian civil society and the Indian State should provide equal space to all the various public narratives that exist in J & K.

2334hrs:

I'm really happy for the English cricket team.......as I've predicted as well as want them to win the cricket world cup for the first time ever.

Here's a status report by cricinfo.com :

England's win tonight has put them on ten points with one game in hand. In turn, this has made the other semi-final contenders' task tougher. Here's what they need to do and hope in order to qualify for the knockouts:

Pakistan: Currently on nine points, they need to beat Bangladesh and hope England lose to New Zealand.

Bangladesh: They have seven points with two games in hand. But even beating India and Pakistan may not be enough. They will be rooting for NZ to beat England.

Sri Lanka: They are now out of the race for the top four
