Daily Diary (DD) - Day 225 of 2025

2221hrs:

Family imperatives kept me at home today. Otherwise, I was keen on giving time to Kotli courts and then proceeding to Dadyaal today.

....

On this day, an informative answer to a silly question emerged on Quora in relation to the availability of electricity in China. I'm reproducing the question and answer here too for its related importance to the territory of AJK in particular and JKA as a whole in general:

Question:

How do 90% of people in China have no access to electricity? How do they live?

Answer:

Spoiler alert: Far from sitting in the dark, China’s grid moves oceans of clean electricity from its remote west to its crowded east — the world’s biggest power migration.

Last year, 2.4 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity were transmitted from western China to the east, enough to power five Germanys.

More than 80% of that electricity came from clean, renewable sources, a result of China’s West-to-East Power Transmission Project, one of the most ambitious and transformative energy initiatives in the world today. Since its launch, the project has reshaped the nation’s energy landscape by channeling vast amounts of clean power from China’s resource-rich western regions to its densely populated and industrialized eastern coast — traveling thousands of kilometers, crossing mountains, deserts, rivers, and reaching over 500 million people in major cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Beijing.

The project was first formally proposed in the early 2000s and became a key part of China’s national development strategy in 2001. It was born from a structural imbalance: eastern China, home to the country’s most concentrated economic activity and highest electricity demand, lacks the space and natural conditions to generate large-scale renewable energy. Meanwhile, the western regions—Xinjiang, Qinghai, Yunnan, Inner Mongolia—are rich in solar, wind, and hydropower resources but historically lacked sufficient local demand and infrastructure to distribute this power nationally.

Inner Mongolia leads the country in wind power, with over 86 gigawatts of installed capacity, making it China’s largest wind energy base. In Qinghai, the Hainan Prefecture Ecological Solar Park—one of the largest solar farms in the world—spans the high-altitude plateau with 15 gigawatts of installed capacity. Meanwhile, Yunnan and Sichuan play a major role in hydropower generation, harnessing their fast-flowing rivers and rugged terrain.

In contrast, eastern cities, while being China’s economic powerhouse, are dense, industrial, and energy-hungry. Mega-regions like the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta are home to China’s most productive manufacturing hubs and urban centers. These areas have long relied on coal-fired power and, until recently, had limited access to the abundant renewable energy produced in the west, leaving much of it underutilized.

West-to-East power lines weave through Anhui’s morning mist and mountains.

This disconnect between where clean energy is produced and where it’s needed is not unique to China. Around the world, urban and coastal centers demand the most power but rarely have access to renewable-rich landscapes. China’s answer to this dilemma has been to physically connect the country through high-efficiency, long-distance electricity highways.

Closing this energy gap will benefit not only China, but also contributes to the world’s transition to cleaner energy.

What makes this power transfer possible is China’s development and deployment of ultra-high voltage (UHV) transmission technology. Unlike conventional power lines, UHV lines can carry electricity over thousands of kilometers with very little loss. China began investing in UHV research in the early 2000s and now holds over 80 percent of the world’s UHV-related patents. By the end of 2023, the West-to-East Power Transmission Project consists of 39 long-distance UHV corridors, creating an interconnected network that functions as the green arteries of the country’s power system.

Building on its domestic success, China also began sharing its UHV technology with the world.

Earlier this year, China State Grid’s Brazilian subsidiary officially kicked off a ±800 kV UHVDC transmission project in northeastern Brazil, marking State Grid’s 3rd overseas UHV transmission project. The project will integrate wind, solar, and hydropower from Brazil’s northeastern and northern regions, transmitting it through the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, and Goiás to supply electricity to Brasília and surrounding areas—serving a population of around 12 million.

These international projects not only demonstrate the technical reliability and efficiency of China’s UHV systems but also reflect a growing commitment to global energy connectivity and low-carbon development.

China’s West-to-East Power Transmission Project proves that clean energy doesn’t have to stay where it’s made. With the right mix of ambition, innovation, and infrastructure, renewable power can cross mountains, deserts, and megacities — lighting up entire nations. As the world searches for solutions to an accelerating climate crisis, China’s energy superhighway offers a bold blueprint for what’s possible.

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 21 of 2024

1053hrs:

I managed to reverse the setback yesterday by waking up at 0815hrs despite sleeping after 0200hrs. I feel as fresh as needed and thus the 6hrs in 24 needed for recharging one's body and soul proves to be suffice.

I visited the local masjid which happens to be next to my house to seek permission for making an announcement on their loudspeaker to alert the surrounding villages to a public meeting at 1400hrs today in reference to maintaining cleanliness of public space in the local bazaar. The message we received from the Imaam was that guidelines from the Aghaar Darbaar at Kotli (which administers a lot of masaajid in this region) restrict loudspeaker use to the announcements of funerals.

Cleanliness is widely known as 'half of faith' according to Islam and masaajid are supposed to provide community service. Much has to be done for the living, more so than those who have deceased. I relayed this to an uncle of mine to try and speak to the Imaam to address this societal deficiency.

....

JKNIA (Jammu Kashmir National Independence Alliance) has begun regularly conducting webinars on Zoom to address our lingering 'national question' in the wake of an ongoing rights movement in AJK and Gilgit Baltistan. I have had the privilege of being invited to speak on a number of occasions:

Actual Webinar:

Some notes that I made during the programme:

I have taken a public policy approach from the outset in 2005....coming from a background of international journalism and parliamentary correspondence.

Narrative (Agency of the people)

Sovereignty (Have majority of Riyasatis residing in the territory and have legal title via people's reference)

Representative Character (Public Assembly with proportional representation of all parts beginning in AJK and giving seats to all other parts of the erstwhile State gradually)

There are many people, many parties/organisations/alliances/committees/councils but there is an argument that none of them are recognised.....I would argue many enjoy some form of recognition but representative character is missing. We do have globally recognised talent in all fields but we haven't utilised them....conducting our own population census and referendum is the beginning of that process.

India and Pakistan claim to have representative character in the shape of governments/regimes on their respectively controlled sides.

You can overcome all powers (regional & international) with direct democracy....people's opinion + people's resources = people's control of public policy

Baba Jaan - As he lives in the most strategic part of JKA and thus has explained the problem in a nutshell and has given the prescription in a nutshell too.

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 188 of 2022

2110hrs:

Day 32 at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square - Dadyaal.

0831hrs

I am getting slacker by the day....arriving later and later it seems....

Is it because we made some progress yesterday when a bin was delivered for the Square by the local municipality (Baldiya)?

It wasn't quite what we asked for on the 14th of June but it is a start.

Our dreams now have some practical connectivity.

....

Sadaqat Mughal was also released earlier today on bail, after 4 nights and 4 days in captivity. Congratulations to all those who mobilised for his release, at home and abroad. The Pakistani army's arms of direction are being fractured with every liberty they take with our people's conscience and their basic rights.

The earth is also contracting for the rotten system of governance and their agents in AJK.

....

The State of Jammu Kashmir & Allied areas (JKA). The Allied areas are just as - if not more important - than the other components:
....

At the time of writing, we've been deprived of electricity for the past 6 hours in Dadyaal! Which lies in the AJK part of JKA.

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 183 of 2022

1721hrs:

Day 27 at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square - Dadyaal.

0758hrs

....

At midday today we surpassed the half yearly mark of 2022 viz. 182 days x 2 = 364 + 12 hours.

This has by far been our most consistent run of daily weblogging since we began weblogging in 2008. We are well on course this year to beat the peak of 330 daily entries in 2019.

Remember that 2022 would have had an 100% record of daily weblogging, if not for the 4 complete days that I spent in Kotli jail during March.

....

It was also Day 27 of our 'Public Policy Workshop' at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square in Dadyaal, where we sit in 'court' between 0800hrs and 1000hrs every morning without fail. We also hope to maintain this momentum for 365 days, without a break.

Predictably, we are still trying to achieve target 1 at the square. Hence the following brief message accompanying the video below:

My request to each and every aspiring citizen of AJK:

Let's get back to basics....we are not capable of achieving anything if we can't keep our public space clean.

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 68 of 2022

1228hrs:

Day 49 at Martyr's Square Kotli

....

c. 1000hrs:

AJK public Agency has explained to the municipality of Kotli that despite attempts over the past few weeks - through notable citizens of Kotli - we were not able to receive a large bin (with lid) for keeping Shaheed Chowk clean and green. We have now decided to get our own made and have informed the municipality that they are welcome to provide us the required bin(s) at any point in the future.

....

Update 1530hrs on Wed 9 March 2022:

It is understood that the local administration is under increasing pressure to evict me from Martyr's Square Kotli. Today is Day 49. So, we need to be clear where all this 'heat' is coming from.

We also need to understand that we are on the precipice of permanent division of Jammu Kashmir & Allied areas (JKA).

Martyr's Square (Shaheed Chowk) Kotli is our last line of defence. If the public protects me, we will avoid division and continue travelling on the path of becoming amongst the top 10 economies of the world, with associated quality in governance.

If the public cannot hold Shaheed Chowk, we are staring down a dark barrel.

All contingencies must be activated asap.

End of note....

Meanwhile, the status of freedom of speech in AJK:

Mono narratives = repression = slavery = a war against humankind
