Daily Diary (DD) - Day 159 of 2023

0833hrs:

Progress is discernible but not as yet overwhelming, as it is likely to become in the coming days, weeks and months.

We have now improved our daily routine to waking at 0730hrs, half an hour's improvement on yesterday (viz. 0800hrs) but still one and a half hour away from our optimal target of waking at 0600hrs. Nevertheless, we will get there.

Here's our daily morning walk video:
....

A productive day commenced with a lecture on productivity at Dhamol, Kotli:

We were then requested to give a brief lecture on #AJKReferendum2023 :

....

Later in the afternoon, we had our first TikTok interview of the day which also happens to be our eleventh TikTok offering:

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 147 of 2023

2036hrs:

A lot is cooking. One of our close aides and co-citizen extraordinaire Israr Ahmed s/o Muhammad Riyasat was picked up by 'some men' - accompanied by the local police - in the middle of the night (reported to be c. 0100hrs) from his home, while sleeping with his family.

It emerged that he was picked up for criticising or mocking the Pakistani army's attempts to generate public solidarity in Dadyaal yesterday.

Stiff reaction came in the morning from the public and from Israr Ahmed's political party - JKLF - in particular.

Consequently and post 'arrest' a document was circulated to the public via the district magistrate's office in Mirpur that Israr Ahmed had been arrested under 16 MPO (Maintenance of Public Order) and would be detained at Mirpur central jail for 30 days. Further, that the order could be judicially challenged.

It should be clear that - from past experience - if the public had not made a timely intervention on Israr's nocturnal abduction, he would probably be declared missing indefinitely.

Public pressure ensured that the location of Israr's detention became clear and that legal remedy was available.

The Pakistani military should not make the mistake of considering this territory to be like their own. They should also refrain from exporting Pakistan's political instability into this territory. It is ridiculous that they feel the need to force our public to come out onto the streets, in solidarity with them.

The above are some of the concerns cited by our public.

The following is the public statement penned by myself in the morning, upon being notified about Israr Ahmed's abduction:

English:
In any society of humans the rule of law and due course of legality is inescapable.

Roman Urdu:
Insaano ke kisi bhi ma-asharey me qanoon ki baala dasti aur qanooni tarteeb (due course of legality) na guzeer hay.

E:
Abducting any citizen of AJK from his or her home in the middle of the night is akin to declaring war on the public of AJK...

RU:
Kisi AJK ke shehri ko raat ko us ke ghar se aghwa karna yaha ki awaam se ilaan e jang ke mutaraadif hay...

E:
The Geneva Convention applies in a conflict zone and the Pakistani State has broken international law in this State.

RU:
Conflict zone me Geneva Convention apply karta hay aur Pakistan ki State ne international law ki khilaaf warzi ki hay is riyasat me.

E:
We make an ethical request that they immediately produce Israr in Dadyaal courts and explain to the judge details of what allegations have been made.

RU:
Un se akhlaaqi quzaarish hay ke wo Israr ko filfor Dadyaal ki adaalat me pesh karey aur judge ke saamney wazaahat karey ke Israr ke khilaaf kya kya ilzamaat hain.

E:
Advice is being sought from international legal experts and diplomats.

RU:
Is case par bain ul aqwami qanooni maahireen aur sifaaratkaro se bhi mashaawarat jaari hay.

E:
If Israr is not produced in Dadyaal courts then we will advocate for sanctions against Pakistan.

RU:
Agar Israr Dadyaal ki adaalat me pesh nahi kiya gaya to hum Pakistan ke khilaaf sanctions ke liye advocacy karengey.

Here are a couple of relevant posts:

Israr Ahmed's party leader Toqeer Gilani also gave a statement of condemnation over his arrest:

However, most notable of all was the roadblock in Dadyaal conducted by Israr's JKLF colleagues at the bypass junction in Amb:

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 48 of 2022

1122hrs:

Day 29 at Martyr's Square Kotli

.....

In the evening 1800hrs meet today, 10 'nationalist' parties were invited yesterday (as notified in yesterday's diary). Four came and six remained absent. It is obvious that I will have to work harder to bring them together in the future. Having said that, 4 out of 10 is not bad....40% is a pass mark:

Day 10 at Martyr's Square - Kotli - AJK

It is always a challenge squeezing in various tasks in a 24 hour cycle. We are always under the impression that whatever remains outstanding will be accomplished on the next day, or the next, or the......or....

The least that one hopes for is that the written record on this journey that began in 2005 is fully published, before one perishes.

The conversations at Shaheed Chowk Kotli are getting more detailed:

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 4 of 2022

1746hrs:

Fighting with time to make sense of diverse opinion and strategy which bombards me on a daily basis. Creating consensus is not elusive though.

......

JKLF (Toqeer faction/group) are into their 59th day of a sit-in protest in Kotli, for the return of their confiscated literature by Pakistan's clandestine agencies. They conducted a novel protest today by symbolically handcuffing themselves, to offer the visiting prime minister of AJK Sardar Abdul Qayoom 'Niazi' some food for thought. After all, the latter is 'officially' the head of State of the 'free' part of Jammu Kashmir & Allied areas.

.......

The following is also a novel manner of attracting attention to the child victims of war, namely 'Red to Green' Kashmir. This annual activity on the 4th of January began a few years ago and initially received some patronage from the AJK government, before paranoia on behalf of the Pakistani State set in, as it usually does with any well-intentioned initiative in AJK. Meanwhile, the commitment of local activists - despite the icy temperatures and rain - may be witnessed:

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 338 of 2021

1319hrs:

We progress but at a snail's pace given the diverse communications facilities at our disposal. Paying attention to everything that is important in public interest requires us to spread ourselves thinly across all sectors.

.....

My aim today was to participate for the first time in a monthly event, which has captured my attention for the past few months - for its revolutionary theory combined with practice - aimed to drive civilisation forward. Namely, 'Mithaali Ma-ashara' (Model Society) of Pachwana and Keri in rural Dadyaal, which are twin villages located in Union Council (UC) Kataar.

However, when I arrived at Sandal Chowk, on the main thoroughfare between Dadyaal and Pakistan, where one road to the right links you to Kataar; the main road was blocked because of a sit-in protest, instigated and driven by the women of the region.

They were in shock and anger over what had happened to Kanwal Matloob, an 11 year old orphaned child who went missing on the 8th of November. It wasn't until yesterday that the public learned of what the poor girl had to endure. Sensing the sensitivity of the case, the district police went public yesterday:

Now, these women wanted immediate justice and no less.

Background to the Kanwal Matloob case can be read in a subsequent entry

Other high profile cases of child female rape and murder cases in the region can be read here

Meanwhile, here's some footage of today's event, which also brought me to tears:

I didn't agree with the protest ending, as I felt certainty of justice must be assured to break such public activity. Our track record of law enforcement in AJK is despicable, to say the least.

.....

Meanwhile, the battle of narratives between Pakistan and Jammu Kashmir & Allied areas (JKA) is going down to the wire in Shaheed Chowk (Martyr's Square) Kotli.

Here's a translation of the above post, written and posted on Toqeer Gilani's own Facebook wall today:

Kotli:

Bullets

- (Jammu Kashmir) Liberation Front workers continue their protest against the Kotli administration for return of their organisational literature.

- A sit in protest at Shaheed Chowk (Martyr's Square) and a rally throughout the city were conducted against the administration and clandestine (intelligence) agencies (of the Pakistani State).

- Slogans of:

'Ghair Mulki Ghaasibo! Kashmir Hamara Chor Do!'
(Foreign Occupiers! Leave our Kashmir (alone)!,

'Gali Gali Me Shor Hay! Intezaamiya Literature Chor Hay!
(There Is Commotion In Every Street & Alley! The Administration Is a Literature Thief!)

and...

'Hamaara Literature Waapas Karo'
(Return Our Literature)

resounded (throughout the city).

- Interference in (local) administrative affairs by the military establishment is illegal and shameful.

- The administration is under constant pressure from the clandestine (Pakistani intelligence) agencies to not return the literature.

- Basic (fundamental) human rights are being denied on both sides of the Ceasefire Line.

- (We) strongly condemn the arrest of Advocate Khurram Parvez from Indian Occupied Kashmir.

- The Pakistani State and its institutions springing into action against (our) 'Declaration of Independence' is the height of hypocrisy and enmity with Kashmir.

- After destroying Pakistan, the Pakistani ruling class is joining hands with the Indian ruling class to stab Jammu Kashmir's freedom struggle in the back.

- (The people of) Kashmir will under no circumstances back down from their right.

- Despite their oppressive and unjust stance, India and Pakistan will have to vacate this territory.

- Participants at the rally and protest sit-in were addressed by Dr Toqeer Gilani, Abid Rajourvi, Ishtiaq Kashir, Zafar Rathore and Haider Ali.

Details

According to details (provided by) Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (Toqeer group), their continuous protest to reclaim their organisation's literature resumed 5 days ago.

(Note: Their literature was confiscated on the 15th of October and they began a daily sit-in protest almost immediately. They stalled it after 26 days when the local administration and local traders provided verbal assurances that their literature would be returned. It wasn't and today effectively marks the 31st day of their sit-in protest with that 19 day interruption in between.)

On Friday, the Liberation Front's (political) workers conducted a protest rally throughout various markets of the city of Kotli along with a sit-in protest at Shaheed Chowk, where they conducted a public meeting too. Participants in the rally continued to chant slogans in favour of the return of their literature; against the Kotli administration and clandestine agencies.

Addressing the participants the zonal president of (Jammu Kashmir) Liberation Front Dr Toqeer Gilani said the Kotli administration is deliberately making matters worse. To not return the literature despite promising on two occasions is regrettable. The (local) administration is a victim of (Pakistan's) military agencies and this despite admitting that there is no malicious or anti-social content in the literature. They (the administration) continue to employ delaying tactics or excuses in not returning the literature and cite pressure from (Pakistan's) military agencies, which is disgraceful.

Pakistan's clandestine agencies are illegally interfering in administrative and political matters (in AJK).

It is not only deplorable that (Pakistan's) military personnel infiltrate (everywhere) from shops to masaajid (plural of masjid) and schools to (local) administrative institutions; they also try to scare, threaten (intimidate/coerce) and apply pressure (on everybody to conform); this illegal interference must stop at all cost.

The (very) agencies that have destroyed Pakistan are now hell bent on stabbing the freedom movement of (the people of) the State of Jammu Kashmir in the back, with the assistance of Indian agencies.

On both sides of the ceasefire line basic human rights are infringed and those who propagate freedom are victimised with hateful propaganda as well as being targeted by the State machinery and black laws.

He (Dr Toqeer) said the return of our organisation's literature is our right and under no circumstances will we withdraw our right.

Dr Toqeer further explains that their 4th September 'Declaration of Independence' at Palandri had 'made life a living hell' for Pakistan's occupying agencies as at all cost they wanted to suppress voices calling for the State's freedom, so that they could execute the permanent division of the State (between them and India without consideration for the people of Jammu Kashmir).

The enmity towards Kashmir (rather the people here) and hypocrisy by Pakistan's rulers has come clearly come to the fore. No Kashmiri is willing to trust any government institution or individual (government employee) working for Pakistan.

There is simply and solely a military occupation here and likewise there is a military occupation on the other side (of Jammu Kashmir) too.

People are abducted from the ceasefire line and their families are warned and intimidated to not speak out, else their (abducted) family member will never come back. Even those (civilians) who become victims of (indiscriminate) land mines are also harassed.

From politics to the economy, from resources to jobs and (government occupational) transfers; everything is under the control of Pakistan's military institutions/agencies, while they talk of the rights of the Kashmiri people. These are the extremes of open hypocrisy and duplicity. It is these very hypocritical policies that have not only made Pakistan totally bankrupt economically today, it is also globally a victim of dire diplomatic isolation.

Dr Toqeer Gilani said the esteemed public of the State of Jammu Kashmir will fight for their right to freedom for centuries if need be and despite all manner of force and oppression India and Pakistan will have to vacate the State of Jammu Kashmir.

He (also) clarified that until their organisation's literature is returned the (Jammu Kashmir) Liberation Front will continue their protest.

Dr Toqeer Gilani and other speakers severely condemned the arrest of the famous human rights activist Advocate Khurram Parvez in Indian-occupied Jammu Kashmir and demanded that he be released immediately.

Speakers (at the public meeting and sit-in protest) also demanded that the killer of minor girl Kanwal Matloob in Dadyaal be severely punished and that her affected family be provided relief.

Participants at the protest were also addressed by the president of JKLF in tehsil (subdivision) Khuiratta namely Abid Rajourvi, Ishtiaq Kashir, Zafar Rathore, Haider Ali and others.

End......(of translation)

Today's protest was particularly defiant given that it flouted yesterday's 'chess move' by Pakistan's clandestine agencies to impose Section 144 via the local District Magistrate. Here's a copy of the notice citing the familiar canard of 'enemy elements will use this sit-in protest to pursue their vulgar ambitions':

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 335 of 2021

1707hrs:

Despite being at home and having ample time to move forward with all pending research work, there are still unavoidable diversions to tend to. For instance, if a distant relation pays you a visit......

I quite like the idea of the late V.S. Naipaul to lock oneself up in a room and put a notice outside to the effect of 'DO NOT DISTURB AT ANY COST', to put food outside and take empty plates away at appropriate intervals, until the particular tasks at hand are complete.

Whether or not one can adhere to this routine in 2021 is problematic, not least for public activists who have a duty to keep socially engaged with the public they are working for.

.....

Meanwhile, just a few kilometres away in Shaheed Chowk Kotli, the JKLF (Toqeer Group) resumed its sit-in protest a few days ago, after a 10 day break to give time to the local administration to talk sense to the Pakistani clandestine agencies on the request of the local business community. However, the Pakistani agencies have yet to surrender and are facing heightened abuse by the locals at this most public of squares:

It is understood that the local Assistant Commissioner has informed the locals that the agencies are uncomfortable with the words 'Elaan e Azadi' (Declaration of Independence) in the literature. Of course, the hypocrisy of the Pakistani State is self evident, not least because they - the Pakistanis - tell the world that AJK is a self governing entity and effectively independent.

Remember that this particular issue has been brewing since the 15th of October. Further background is available here.

The following interview was conducted a few days ago but published today due to technical issues. It also lost about 27 seconds at crucial junctures, which means we have to improve our production facilities somewhat.

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 308 of 2021

2322hrs:

Yet another version of JKLF - (Sagheer group) on this occasion - held its district convention in Kotli today. Their banners also made it clear that the people of this territory are against the permanent division strategy resulting from Indo-Pak bilateralism and created by colonial Britain.

Here's just one example of the strength they showed today:

......

At the same venue (as above video footage) was of course another faction of the JKLF (Toqeer group) conducting their 19th day of a sit-in protest against the confiscation of their literature (ref. Declaration of Independence at Palandri on the 4th of September 2021):

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 298 of 2021

2052hrs:

Proceeding along quite smoothly......

......

In the aftermath of yesterday's contest between our neighbours, art had to intersect with sport and politics. Meanwhile, congratulations to Pakistan for showing a change of character on the field:

.......

The 'Watan Bachao March' (Save our Motherland/Country March) marches on from Rawalakot to Paniola today:

Earlier in the day, JKTV provided some extra coverage to this march by engaging their local correspondent Ajmal Shaheen at Kacheri Chowk while the JKLF were engaging the local public on the referendum:

.......

Meanwhile, another faction of the JKLF (Toqeer Group) continues its daily sit-in protest at Shaheed Chowk, in response to yet another faux pas by Pakistan's clandestine agencies, on Friday the 15th of this month. These agents had ordered the local administration/police to raid the house of a local member of this faction of the JKLF and seize what amounted to about 100,000 copies of their 'declaration of independence', announced at Palandri on the 4th of September.

Pakistan's State employees are now in a real fix because if they return the literature, it will further weaken their presence in this territory and if they don't, the public will become increasingly agitated and expose them for what they have been paid to hide viz. Pakistan's real intentions in Jammu Kashmir & Allied (JKA).

While the Rauf Kashmiri group is into the 11th day of its march from Bhimber to Muzaffarabad, to prevent the permanent division of this territory between India and Pakistan, the Toqeer group is into its 10th day of a sit-in protest, to retrieve the literature it was intending to distribute throughout AJK, to alert the public on Pakistan's attempts to integrate the part of JKA it controls into its own federation, a la India and its 5th August 2019 move:
