Daily Diary (DD) - Day 155 of 2025

0946hrs:

Waking up in Thota near Garhi Dupatta, as we continue discussions with the public on how to penetrate the defences against peace laid out by external forces in this territory.

We will be trying to meet the Deputy Commissioner of district Jhelum Valley today, to either assist us in overcoming these egotistical hurdles or to witness an escalation, initially through 500 members of the public assisting us in overcoming the Chattian checkpost after Eid.

If the above peaceful assertion doesn't work then we will escalate this matter through diplomatic forums, as we have been compelled to do on previous occasions. In short, there is always a solution available in favour of the public.

These external forces seem to be forever keen on humiliating themselves.

....

In this FaceBook post you will find a letter submitted to the Assistant Commissioner of Hattian Bala (whereby the district has now been renamed as 'Jhelum Valley) and a short video upon entering his office, who was extremely reluctant to accept it, given the illegality of the AJK governing structure. They consider it death to engage in any written form with the public, except to impose notices etc.

(transparency = death while ambiguity = life in such a system)

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 273 of 2023

1405hrs:

Motoring along well towards the final aspects of field work for #AJKReferendum2023 which began on the 23rd of May 2023 at Chamb, 131 days ago with 93 year old Abdul Jabbar Bhat in tow.

....

We began today's proceedings with a presentation in the lofty heights of Bani Hafiz, aided by our venerable host Sahibzada Iftikhar Ahmed whose family is ingrained with deep Sufi traditions from many generations. An antidote to the inhumane 2 nation theory:

We provide an Urdu explanation for our global petition:

....

Our first roadblock emerged today when the building owner of the office we were renting received some oblique threats from Pakistan's clandestine agencies via the AJK police in Barnaala. The latter informed our landlord Faizan Subhani that we didn't have 'security clearance' for the work we were doing, which is essentially a euphemism for alerting our public that Pakistan's agencies are breathing down their neck. Nobody - and particularly those with assets - wish to get entangled with Pakistan's roving agencies.

After extensive deliberations with our well wishers in the vicinity of Moil and further afield, we decided that it would be imprudent if we put those very people that we are working for, in trouble. Yes, we are designing and implementing world class governance in our territory whose dividends should be received by our public at large, yet if these very people get agitated by our presence due to Pakistan's agencies creating havoc in their lives then our presence here would be counter productive.

It was agreed that we should complete #AJKReferendum2023 in the stronger parts of the territory and then use the momentum of that strength to complete our tasks in the weaker parts of AJK. Bhimber as a district has been traditionally weak - along with Haveli and Hattian - and thus we will venture north to Poonch division via Mirpur and Kotli:

We took our first major step towards constitutional and political evolution in 2016 via a district court in Hattian Bala (now described as Jhelum Valley) when we proved that a Pakistani identity card is not our primary identity document in AJK. Rather, that the State Subject Certificate of JKA is:

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 31 of 2020

0045hrs:

Burning the midnight oil as I prepare for Leepa.

Please bear the following 2 links in mind, as we have some history:

Exhibit 1 of 2

Exhibit 2 of 2

.......

As suspected, I was swarmed by Pakistan's agency operatives at Reshian, enroute to Leepa. After a verbal tussle with them, I insisted that they need to refer to the local administration if they have any issues. I reminded them repeatedly that they had no legal standing here.

The Head Constable of the AJK police at Reshian checkpost was Zameer Ahmed who politely asked me to postpone my visit for just a couple of days to let the weather clear further and that I should work in other subdivisions in the meantime. As I cannot ignore what my co-citizens ever suggest to me, I decided to return to Hattian and continue my work there:

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 288 of 2019

1403hrs:

Pushing on..even from a position of standstill......We were denied entry to Chakothi bazaar 3 days ago. Our purpose was merely to investigate the sentiments of the local people, in relation to the dharna (sit-in protest).

Today we decided to use some moral pressure in numbers (34 co-citizens in total) to convince our local administration to explain to the 'shadows' operating in this territory without legal reference, to not obstruct public interest here.

The police at the containers offered to take us to the DC (Deputy Commissioner), who they insisted was all-powerful in making such a decision to allow us (3 co-citizens and 2 policemen) to proceed to Chakothi. Of course, the DC isn't all-powerful at all. The latter also ensured that he wasn't available......we made a fruitless trip to Chinari and onto Hattian without a trace of him anywhere.

....

In the late afternoon, the following news emerged:

Note:

The UN delegates visited and met the JKLF leadership at the UNMOGIP office in Muzaffarabad, not the LOC at Chakothi. Apparently they cited the reason as not being able to obtain an NOC from the Pakistanis!

Isn't that farcical? A country that has no legal status in J & K is able to dictate whether or not UN delegates can visit any given part of AJK, even if the AJK prime minister is inviting them!

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 260 of 2019

0922hrs:

The confrontation between the Pakistani narrative and the internal narrative in AJK is going to get more intense by the day:

Translated thus:

Quit Jammu Kashmir Movement

- The formal initiation of an awareness/public contact campaign has begun from district Bhimber

- We make an appeal to all patriots of this land and pro freedom (activists/citizens) to fully participate in this campaign and to begin a struggle for a prosperous future

The map is of all 10 districts in AJK. From South to North:

1) Bhimber

2) Mirpur
3) Kotli
4) Sudhnoti
5) Poonch
6) Haveli
7) Bagh
8) Hattian Bala
9) Muzaffarabad
10) Neelam Valley

End of translation....

Today, we have managed to reclaim a 90% success rate in daily blogging this year (2019).

That is, 234 days of 260 days this year have had a daily entry: 234 / 260 = 90%

This is a marked improvement on last year (2018).

That was, 255 days of 365 days last year had a daily entry: 255 / 365 = 69.9%

Last year was a drastic improvement on all the years before, since this blog came into being in 2008:

(Year)  (Entries)  (Annual Percentage)
2017:     5              = 1.4%
2016:     8              = 2.2%
2015:     5              = 1.4%
2014:     4              = 1.1%
2013:     7              = 1.9%
2012:     3              = 0.8%
2011:     51            = 14%
2010:     11            = 3%
2009:    37             = 10.1 %
2008:     18            = 8.3% (217 days of 365 from when the blog was created)

That gives us a mean average from the 10 years before 2018 of:  4.4% per year

We understand that many of our co-citizens as well as the net connected world in general use other more popular platforms for putting out their story e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Wordpress etc.

However, I prefer the functionality of this platform and it is my understanding that any aspect of my work can be referenced or pinpointed here, relatively easier than any other social media platform available.

......

Since yesterday, we've been hearing of rumours that the tribal Pathans (who 'helped' capsize the region of Jammu & Kashmir in 1947) are returning once again to Muzaffarabad. Here is footage from Abbotabad Adda (Bus Station) last night:

Here's further footage of them, with captions in English this time:

Unsurprisingly, this story is getting a lot of coverage in social media throughout AJK:

These Kabailis (Tribesmen) even held a press conference in Muzaffarabad today. They didn't forget to mention that Kashmir - both sides - belongs to Pakistan, in their opinion. Here's some video footage of the press conference, courtesy Dunya News:

So, this is aggression on the part of Pakistan. The Qabaili (Tribesman) who also happens to be a politician clearly said and I paraphrase: Both divided parts of Kashmir belong to Pakistan. He also equated the Pathan tribesmen with Pakistan, Kashmir and Muslims.

What is their intent?

The timing of this tribal visit is not incidental. It is also clearly State sponsored.

We need a direct forum with the UK on this matter, talking with Pakistan has always ended with silence and of late with bowed heads on their part.

The British empire had George Cunningham as Governor of NWFP (KPK today) when the forbears of today's visitors drum beat their way from the tribal areas - along the same Braarkot entry point in J & K in 1947.

The Pakistanis can no longer be controlling our police or our civil defence...they may well be leading us into another religious identity war......we need a local IGP (Inspector General of Police) for a start. We cannot have a repeat of 1947 except in reverse.

That is:

Initiatives for peace, dialogue and tolerance of distinct national(istic) narratives exist throughout J & K. The States of the world and global civil society should help us recognise these internal narratives, which are being violently suppressed by India and Pakistan.

We could also approach this regionally but at least one of India and Pakistan will have to play 'ball'. Which will it be?

In a personal capacity, I've had plenty of interactions with Pakistanis throughout my life and have only a few fond memories compared to the majority of those I remember for their intolerance, chicanery and use of Islam to cover their tracks.

I maybe biased on some way but I swear I had good relations with all other nationalities. I don't even remember anybody ripping me off except citizens of Pakistan, although it is possible one or two such crimes were committed by my co-citizens of AJK. Well, we have been controlled by them for 72 years.

I remember my Indian Gujerati and Bangladeshi friends in particular. They were always so hospitable, tolerant and never tried to trick me into anything for personal benefit.

....

Update 1830hrs:

Given the security scenario in AJK and what increasingly seems to be a not so subtle attempt by the State of Pakistan to promote freelance fighters to cross the LOC en masse, the best I can do at the minute is launch an online poll to remove the lent officer, under whose presumed command our AJK police are made to act against public opinion and public interest in AJK. A local civil intelligence mechanism and civil defence operating under the command and control of a local IG could help thwart this overbearing war narrative:

For those of you who can't read the content of the FB post above:

Measuring Public Opinion in AJK:

Having spent almost 14 and a half years on the ground in #AJK , in the interest of peace in #JandK The IGP AJK must now be an aspiring citizen & State subject of Jammu & Kashmir State forthwith.

Else we may see a repeat of 1947.

A note from history:

.....

It isn't all sweet when AJK or POK is discussed in Delhi but this could be an exception:

..........

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter Faisal Malik originates from Kotli. He made his entry today in an 'Azad Kashmir' flag. He won the bout too!

In such an heightened environment where the internal narrative of AJK is crossing swords with the Pakistani narrative, some wonder why the Pakistani media isn't giving Faisal Malik any coverage, when they acted differently to when Amir Khan won a similar title. Is it because Amir Khan originates from Pakistan?

Meanwhile, here's Faisal's next bout for those of you interested:

Advancing the Process of Constitutional Evolution in AJK

Having been taken into protective custody by Leepa Subdivisional Police in July 2015 on the instructions of Pakistan's clandestine agencies; 6 days incarceration then, followed by 2 days in Reshian/Hattian in August 2015, when I was prevented from re-entering Leepa Valley and now; after spending 19 days in Chinari jail, my research activities in public interest have been declared as genuine.

A decision by the District Sessions judge in Hattian Bala found the allegations against me baseless and irrelevant, on Friday the 18th of March. My stance of not deeming a Pakistani ID card as compulsory for a state citizen of AJK and my effort to create a representative sample of public opinion in AJK - by conducting a national survey - were effectively recognized as my fundamental right.

Many thanks to all the politicians, administration officials, AJK police, lawyers throughout Muzaffarabad division, members of the judiciary and perhaps most of all; the average citizen of AJK for making this whole 9 month ordeal an honourable and pleasurable experience.

Please read through the court's decision and comment as appropriate.

Chakothi: At the Inter-section of Patriotism, Inhumanity, Public Service and Treason

Chakothi Crossing Point

Notes from Diary of 070715:

Since arriving in Chakothi (Tehsil and District Hattian Bala - Division Muzaffarabad) yesterday evening, Pakistan's security service apparatus has been hounding, hassling and trying to terrify us away from this region. They are meting out this treatment to any and every citizen who makes contact with us. For example, the house where we stayed last night in Taafarabad (about a km from the LOC) is still being hounded with phone calls whereby Pakistan's security services are asking the womenfolk of that household as to why they accommodated us etc....

I spent more than an hour this morning with the local head of Pakistan's army, namely Col. Javed of Barnaala (AJK); explaining who I am and what I'm doing in AJK un-interrupted since April 2005. In summary, that I'm exercising the Right to Self-Determination as a citizen of this hapless territory which has been deprived of its own narrative and political agency.

I'm conducted the final phase of the National Survey begun in 2011 (which involves randomly sampling 10,000 citizens of AJK by covering every tehsil, profession and tribe) while my wife and two children have been trying to 'enjoy' the natural delights of Kashmir during their summer holidays.

At the moment, we are staying in a house in Chakothi town. What has compelled me to contact the British Government and to put up this update on FB is the fact that just before Iftaar, yet another member of Pakistan's security services came looking for me and the idea of me having to clarify my identity for the upteenth time in the last 24 hrs is way beyond the level of indignity that I can bear in my own home....

The above-mentioned gentleman came to the house where we were staying about an hour after iftaar in desperate search of a way and means to oust me from this part of my motherland. The hour long discussion was heated at times and involved many an inane question from him. In the mutual cross examination that ensued, i discovered that he had 'migrated' from Uri (barely 20 kilometres away on the Srinagar Road beyond the LOC) in 1990. It sickened and disgusted me to see him straining to find a way of pleasing his Pakistani superiors. An acute form of treason he was engaged in though little did he consider it as such.

By the grace of the Almighty, he chose the wrong individual of course and sheepishly left after an hour.

As for Pakistan's premier spy agency: smart move - to use a state subject for their dirty work - but not smart enough!

On a more serious note, the above is just a glimpse of what the local citizens of the 'free' part of the State of Jammu and Kashmir have to endure on a daily basis, decade after decade. All for the cause of Pakistan's myopic security and water interests, concealed under the guise of a benign Islamic fraternity.
