Daily Diary (DD) - Day 225 of 2025

2221hrs:

Family imperatives kept me at home today. Otherwise, I was keen on giving time to Kotli courts and then proceeding to Dadyaal today.

....

On this day, an informative answer to a silly question emerged on Quora in relation to the availability of electricity in China. I'm reproducing the question and answer here too for its related importance to the territory of AJK in particular and JKA as a whole in general:

Question:

How do 90% of people in China have no access to electricity? How do they live?

Answer:

Spoiler alert: Far from sitting in the dark, China’s grid moves oceans of clean electricity from its remote west to its crowded east — the world’s biggest power migration.

Last year, 2.4 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity were transmitted from western China to the east, enough to power five Germanys.

More than 80% of that electricity came from clean, renewable sources, a result of China’s West-to-East Power Transmission Project, one of the most ambitious and transformative energy initiatives in the world today. Since its launch, the project has reshaped the nation’s energy landscape by channeling vast amounts of clean power from China’s resource-rich western regions to its densely populated and industrialized eastern coast — traveling thousands of kilometers, crossing mountains, deserts, rivers, and reaching over 500 million people in major cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Beijing.

The project was first formally proposed in the early 2000s and became a key part of China’s national development strategy in 2001. It was born from a structural imbalance: eastern China, home to the country’s most concentrated economic activity and highest electricity demand, lacks the space and natural conditions to generate large-scale renewable energy. Meanwhile, the western regions—Xinjiang, Qinghai, Yunnan, Inner Mongolia—are rich in solar, wind, and hydropower resources but historically lacked sufficient local demand and infrastructure to distribute this power nationally.

Inner Mongolia leads the country in wind power, with over 86 gigawatts of installed capacity, making it China’s largest wind energy base. In Qinghai, the Hainan Prefecture Ecological Solar Park—one of the largest solar farms in the world—spans the high-altitude plateau with 15 gigawatts of installed capacity. Meanwhile, Yunnan and Sichuan play a major role in hydropower generation, harnessing their fast-flowing rivers and rugged terrain.

In contrast, eastern cities, while being China’s economic powerhouse, are dense, industrial, and energy-hungry. Mega-regions like the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta are home to China’s most productive manufacturing hubs and urban centers. These areas have long relied on coal-fired power and, until recently, had limited access to the abundant renewable energy produced in the west, leaving much of it underutilized.

West-to-East power lines weave through Anhui’s morning mist and mountains.

This disconnect between where clean energy is produced and where it’s needed is not unique to China. Around the world, urban and coastal centers demand the most power but rarely have access to renewable-rich landscapes. China’s answer to this dilemma has been to physically connect the country through high-efficiency, long-distance electricity highways.

Closing this energy gap will benefit not only China, but also contributes to the world’s transition to cleaner energy.

What makes this power transfer possible is China’s development and deployment of ultra-high voltage (UHV) transmission technology. Unlike conventional power lines, UHV lines can carry electricity over thousands of kilometers with very little loss. China began investing in UHV research in the early 2000s and now holds over 80 percent of the world’s UHV-related patents. By the end of 2023, the West-to-East Power Transmission Project consists of 39 long-distance UHV corridors, creating an interconnected network that functions as the green arteries of the country’s power system.

Building on its domestic success, China also began sharing its UHV technology with the world.

Earlier this year, China State Grid’s Brazilian subsidiary officially kicked off a ±800 kV UHVDC transmission project in northeastern Brazil, marking State Grid’s 3rd overseas UHV transmission project. The project will integrate wind, solar, and hydropower from Brazil’s northeastern and northern regions, transmitting it through the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, and Goiás to supply electricity to Brasília and surrounding areas—serving a population of around 12 million.

These international projects not only demonstrate the technical reliability and efficiency of China’s UHV systems but also reflect a growing commitment to global energy connectivity and low-carbon development.

China’s West-to-East Power Transmission Project proves that clean energy doesn’t have to stay where it’s made. With the right mix of ambition, innovation, and infrastructure, renewable power can cross mountains, deserts, and megacities — lighting up entire nations. As the world searches for solutions to an accelerating climate crisis, China’s energy superhighway offers a bold blueprint for what’s possible.

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 211 of 2025

0345hrs:

Already 8 hours and 45 minutes into my latest hunger strike. This time it is a bit different. I am not alone and not even the first to conduct this particular hunger strike.

I am the third and I started 5 hours later than them. Ayaz Butt began his hunger strike in jail yesterday at 1400hrs and he was joined outside by Zubair Bhatti at the same time. The latter has also been conducting a sit-in protest on behalf of Ayaz Butt at Abshaar Chowk, since the 25th of June.

I joined them in the evening at 1900hrs.

I did try to sleep at 2000hrs and didn't fair too badly, even though I've been lying on a simple floor mat on the street at Abshaar Chowk. That is, until the heavens burst with rain at c. 0200hrs.

At almost 0400hrs it is still raining, less intensely though.

Here's another important life anecdote from Quora:

A giant ship's engine broke down and no one could repair it, so they hired a Mechanical Engineer with over 30 years of experience.

He inspected the engine very carefully, from top to bottom. After seeing everything, the engineer unloaded his bag and pulled out a small hammer.

He knocked something gently. Soon, the engine came to life again. The engine has been fixed!

A week later the engineer mentioned to the ship owner that the total cost of repairing the giant ship was $20,000.

"What?!" said the owner.

"You did almost nothing. Give us a detailed bill."

The answer is simple:

Tap with a hammer: $2

Know where to knock and how much to knock: $19,998

The importance of appreciating one's expertise and experience...because those are the results of struggles, experiments and even tears.

If I do a job in 30 minutes it's because I spent 20 years learning how to do that in 30 minutes. You owe me for the years, not the minutes.

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 45 of 2023

1604hrs:

Day 254 at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Square - Dadyaal.

0918hrs

Attendance = 100%

Punctuality = 69%

176 days on time or early of 254

Punctuality surplus = 516 minutes

Punctuality Consistency Status = 0 days

Hours completed at Square = 456

Note: Our break in the previous 24 hours was c. 14.5 hours (between 1830hrs and 0918hrs this morning). It was the longest break yet, in the 19 days of fulfilling what is effectively being on duty almost round the clock.

I had a splitting headache, onset of flu and a disorientated stomach from yesterday afternoon all at once. By 1830hrs I felt it prudent to take respite at home and avoid the chilly air.

Having said all that, I did venture out just before midnight to the Square to check on matters. It did become a long winded 'overstay' at home ultimately as we suffered our first punctuality lapse after 18 days (equalling the previous consistency record thus far). It's back to square 1 in that respect.

This also meant that after achieving our record overall punctuality performance of 70% yesterday, it has dropped back down to 69% overnight due to the lapse this morning.

Noting the wisdom of others is also an important part of our work and there is always much we can learn from other human beings. The following lesson is universal:

As part of my daily reading on Quora I came across the following notes, which may be very telling about our water dilemma, even though it discusses the water relationship between 2 of our neighbours and not us in JKA:

What is the water conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan?

Its a matter of greed.

Pakistan is drowning in water and Afghanistan is facing extreme drought. Pakistan is against Afghanistan diverting excess water that leaves Afghanistan, goes into Pakistan, then ends up in the Indian ocean. Pakistan insists on Afghanistan sending all its water to Pakistan so that it may be wasted by ending up in the ocean rather than Afghanistan using that water to green itself.

Afghanistan has tremendous hydro-power potential. Pakistan wants Afghanistan to be dependant on ridiculously inflated foreign electricity rates rather than generate its own and to benefit its people.
