Daily Diary (DD) - Day 138 of 2026

1124hrs:

A relatively calm and uneventful night compared to the few preceding it. I slept well before midnight last night, though I didn't get up till about 1000hrs this morning.

Many in our territory and our neighbourhood consider our immediate political future to be uncertain. I am trying to explain to them that there is a strategy in place that will ensure that we move from uncertainty (because of variables we have surrendered outside our control) to certainty based on variables within our control.

....

Mukaalima or dialogue is finally trending as an activity in our territory. Belated but still welcome:

(English Translation):

On the subject of 12 refugee seats in the AJK 'Legislative Assembly':

A dialogue based conversation between research(ers), legal and political experts....

Do listen, learn, teach & share:

With your own written words.

(End of translation)..

Notes taken from the c. 3 hour session will be shared here (for educational purposes):

After all, every dialogue in public interest should be recorded and transcribed too. This will save us effort in the future, where our analysis can be sharpened for more demanding tasks ahead, waiting for all of us. Especially those living or connected to AJK but not forgetting the benefit becoming available to the rest of JKA:

Note:
These notes are not analysing each and every point made by each participant, although every point adds its own merit to the conversation. I am just trying to identify those points that will help us best, as we move forward on this people's (public) consultation process. I will also make comments here (which for time constraints I couldn't make during the actual Space), in response to some of the points raised by others.

Total share of 3 hours, 13 minutes & 26 seconds:

Dr Syed Nazir Gilani - Foremost jurist and expert on United Nations (UN) template on Jammu Kashmir & Allied (areas) hailing from Baramulla in the Kashmir Valley, though resident in London & currently residing in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Amongst other professional accolades, in 1984 he founded Jammu Kashmir Council for Human Rights (JKCHR), which subsequently obtained consultative status at the UN via ECOSOC (United Nations Economic and Social Council).

Daily Diary (DD) - Day 31 of 2026

1006hrs:

I'm not escaping that 0900hrs waking up routine just yet. I'm also slipping into scrolling in the evening beyond 2000hrs when I should be asleep by that time, in order to get up at the appointed time of 0300hrs.

This has already proved costly and I continue counting on a daily basis.

From a regional environmental point of view the following article reports an extremely disturbing phenomenon. Many thanks to SAPAN for bringing this to us:

Delhi and Lahore’s winter smog is dimming Kathmandu’s mountains too by Sapan News

Pollution from North India and Pakistan is clouding Kathmandu’s skies, exposing how shared airsheds are accelerating health crises and glacier melt.

It was later in the day that we learned of Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry's demise. He also happened to be the president of AJK. The following eulogy by Dr Nazir Gilani (on the 2nd of February) couldn't be more precise and compact in its verdict:

The Dead Has No Defence

Symbol

Symbolic

under oath

Symbolic

Symbol

Responsibility

exclusive

institutionalise

institutionalise

Rule of Law

Audit

Electoral Rolls and Polling Sub-Committee

substantive

lift off

Symbolism

Responsibility

under oath

Symbolic

compromised

The above eulogy can be read directly on Dr Nazir Gilani's FaceBook page here.

My comment:

This was a highly dignified way of explaining how Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry - who had the opportunity to do much more than he did, using different methods than those he adopted.

Perhaps he felt that his lifestyle should suit his personality and the political decisions he made, reflected that. It may be said that he contributed to the 'Kashmir Cause' in his own unique way, unparalleled in itself.

The dead have no defence (as you rightly point out) and I regret not spending a bit more time with him when he was relatively fit and healthy, to put some of those burning questions to him.

I don't think anybody could write a more precise obituary of the late Barrister Sultan Mahmood. I have thus decided to feature it on my daily journey for the day he died.
I arrived in Mirpur yesterday, late again.

I always seem to have time for the famous American author Robert Greene and have listened to this brief explanation of the term #PostiveMasculinity by him, with great intent and a bit of irony:
