One is always navigating between the 'easy' and the 'hard' way of living their lives and pursuing their ambitions.
If one doesn't choose their 'hard', it will be chosen for them. At the macro level I have most certainly chosen my 'hard' but it is the micro level in which I have struggled, particularly of late.
